1. Verdict
Definition of "success"
This portfolio uses two bars (../../README.md):
- Tier A (venture): $1M ARR within 36 months, ≥70% gross margin, ≥50% month-12 logo retention.
- Tier B (profitable business, the default target): $20k+ MRR (≈ $250k ARR) within 24 months, profitable, ≥80% gross margin, ≥70% month-3 retention.
The main measure is the MRR ladder ($1k to $50k by month 24) in WHAT-TO-DO-AND-AVOID.md.
Which profession and region? Six candidates scored
Each is scored 1–5 on six tests (5 is best). The evidence is in research/10.
| Test | UK accountants, MTD IT quarterly | Generic portal, all professions (as described) | Indian CAs, GST and ITR season | US immigration lawyers | UK / AU mortgage brokers | US CPAs, tax season |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Frequency of the chase (retention) | 5. Four deadlines a year, plus Self Assessment | 3. Varies by job | 5. GST is monthly | 3. Per case, not recurring | 2. Per case | 2. Once a year |
| A new, dated forcing event | 5. MTD IT live since Apr 2026; £30k wave Apr 2027, £20k Apr 2028 (verified) | 1. None | 2. No new mandate found | 2. Policy churn, but no new document mandate | 1. None | 1. None |
| Room beside the bundled incumbents | 2. Content Snare is here and focused on MTD; Glasscubes is free; BrightManager, Karbon and TaxDome bundle it | 1. Content Snare everywhere, plus every suite | 2. QwikCA, CA OMS, Practive, Finexo, 1CA and CaCRM already send WhatsApp reminders (snippet) | 1. Docketwise includes questionnaires and document requests (verified) | 1. Acre's portal already uploads and flags missing items (trade press); FileInvite owns lending | 1. TaxDome, Karbon, Canopy, SmartVault |
| Price the buyer will pay | 4. £39–179/mo is inside the range UK practices already pay for apps | 3 | 1. The ceiling looks like ₹10,000 a year (~$10/mo) for a comparable CA tool | 4. $80–120/user/mo already paid for suites | 3 | 4 |
| Cheap, proven channel | 4. Xero App Store UK, AccountingWEB community, AAT groups | 2. No single channel | 3. WhatsApp groups, ICAI circles; low price makes sales costly | 2. Bar associations, AILA; sales-led | 2. Networks and CRMs decide | 3. App stores, but bid-up search |
| Reachable for a small team | 4. English-language, one tax system, self-serve | 2 | 3 | 2. Legal risk, US-only | 2 | 3 |
| Total (of 30) | 24 | 12 | 16 | 14 | 11 | 14 |
UK MTD wins because it is the only candidate with a new, dated, recurring forcing event. It also scores lowest-but-one on "room beside the incumbents". That is the honest weakness, and it caps the odds.
FileInvite ($22.8M ARR in 2024, Latka estimate) proves that lending document collection is the biggest pool of money in the catalog. But it is sold to lenders and through broker CRMs and aggregators, which is not reachable for one or two people.
Probability by version (MRR by month 24, with the founder conditions met)
| Version | $1k | $5k | $10k | $20k | Why |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| As described: generic portal, four professions | 20% | 5% | 2% | 1% | A late clone of Content Snare, with no wedge, no channel and four unrelated buyers |
| Recommended: UK MTD quarterly chaser, ~15 hrs/week | 40% | 17% | 8% | 3% | A loud new pain and a free channel, but the leader is already there |
| Recommended: UK MTD quarterly chaser, full-time | 55% | 27% | 15% | 7% | Same, with enough hours to sell in every buying window and ship before Feb 2027 |
| Indian CAs, GST and ITR season | 30% | 8% | 3% | 1% | Monthly rhythm is great, but price ceiling and 6+ local suites with WhatsApp reminders |
| US immigration lawyers | 20% | 6% | 3% | 1% | Docketwise and peers bundle it with form-filling, which is the real value |
| UK / AU mortgage brokers | 15% | 4% | 2% | <1% | Acre and FileInvite; CRMs decide |
| Base rate proxy: new subscription apps (RevenueCat) | 17.3% | — | 4.6% | — | Mostly consumer mobile apps; no verified B2B base rate exists |
These are judgment estimates, not computed statistics.
Tier A and Tier B
- Tier A: <1% at ~15 hrs/week, ~1% full-time. $1M ARR is ~830 practices at ~$100/mo. The leader is estimated near that level after 9 years.
- Tier B: ~2% at ~15 hrs/week, ~6% full-time.
Fundable in current form?
No. It is a feature-shaped product in a category where the leader has a head start of about 9 years. No pre-seed investor funds "Content Snare, but cheaper per client and on WhatsApp". It doesn't need funding. See 06.
One-paragraph verdict
Document chasing is a real, daily pain for accountants, and the evidence for paying customers is solid: Content Snare's estimated ~$1M ARR, its Xero award and FileInvite's estimated ~$23M ARR in lending. But "a portal that chases documents" is a feature that every practice-management suite now includes, and the standalone leader is well reviewed, certified and cheap. The idea as written picks four professions and no forcing event, which is the weakest possible shape. The one opening the research supports is UK MTD for Income Tax. It turned one annual chase into four, and it adds about a million more taxpayers in April 2027 and more in 2028. The late-paperwork clients are exactly the ones practices struggle with. That opening is real but contested. Content Snare publicly pivoted its UK marketing to MTD in June 2026, and Glasscubes gives an MTD tool to firms for free. Build the narrow chaser, price it per MTD client, make the client side a two-minute phone task, run a concierge quarter before writing code, and stop at day 60 if practices say their suite already does it.
