2. Market Reality Check
Competitor prices and features come from pages fetched on 30 Sept 2026, or from secondary sources where marked. See 10. Re-verify before using them externally.
2.1 Who exactly is the buyer?
"Accountants, lawyers, mortgage brokers and immigration consultants" is four buyers with four workflows. Split the accounting buyer, the only one with a forcing event, by what each group can pay and whether it is free to choose a tool:
| Segment (UK) | Rough size | Tools today | Willingness to pay for a chaser | Pain score (1–10) | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sole practitioners and 2–10 staff firms with 20–300 MTD IT clients, on Xero or QuickBooks, no practice-management suite | Several thousand to low tens of thousands (unverified; 12,000+ ICAEW firms and ~77,000 small practices and bookkeepers, secondary) | Email, WhatsApp from personal phones, spreadsheets, Xero Practice Manager (no client portal) | £30–150/mo if it visibly cuts chasing | 8. Four chases a year per client, penalty points from April 2027 | Best buyer. |
| AAT-licensed bookkeepers doing clients' MTD records | Thousands (unverified) | Same | £20–60/mo | 7 | Good second segment. Lower price, same job. |
| Firms already on Karbon Business, TaxDome, BrightManager, Senta or Pixie | Unknown share (the key unknown) | Bundled client requests and automated reminders | ~£0 for a second tool | 4. Already solved "well enough" | Avoid. Only reachable when they leave the suite. |
| Content Snare customers | Hundreds to low thousands (73 UK Xero reviews) | Content Snare | Would switch only for price or client experience | 5 | Hard. Switching mid-year is unlikely; target them at renewal. |
| 20+ staff firms | Hundreds | Suites, IT policies, procurement | High, but they buy suites | 6 | Not reachable for a small team. |
Pain score for the product as described: 5/10. "Collecting documents" hurts, but it's already served. Pain score for the MTD quarterly chase at small practices: 8/10. That is new work since April 2026, repeated four times a year, with the worst clients chased hardest.
2.2 Competitors and incumbents
The standalone leader
| Tool | What it covers of yours | Why a practice would or wouldn't switch to you |
|---|---|---|
| Content Snare (Brisbane, founded 2016; ~$990K ARR, 9 staff, Latka estimate) | Everything in the idea as described: requests, checklists, automatic reminders, client portal, recurring quarterly requests, bulk requests, XPM client import and push-back, ISO 27001, 40–400 SMS a month by plan | Won't switch if the practice is happy. Its pricing is per active request (Basic $35 / 20, Plus $71 / 50, Pro $119 / 100, Custom $215+ / 200+, annual). Might switch if 150–400 quarterly MTD clients push it to Pro or Custom, or if its clients don't use the portal. |
Bundled in practice-management suites (your ceiling)
| Tool | Chasing included? | Price (verified unless marked) |
|---|---|---|
| Karbon | Client requests and automated reminders on Business and above, not on Team | Team $59 / Business $89 per user per month (annual) |
| TaxDome | Client requests, portal, mobile app (details unverified) | ~$1,000 per user per year Pro, ~$1,200 Business (secondary sources) |
| BrightManager (was AccountancyManager, UK and Ireland) | "Automated client emails and text messages" requesting records; client portal, e-signature | €50.75/user/mo monthly Essential (Irish page); GBP price unverified |
| Glasscubes MTD Assist (UK) | Guides clients through the quarterly filing; "puts the responsibility back on the client" | "Free for firms and affordable for clients" (Sept 2026) |
| TaxNav HQ (UK) | Automated reminders, client communication materials (snippet only) | Unverified |
| Senta, Pixie, TaxCalc, IRIS (UK) | Client portals and reminders (unverified) | Unverified |
| Canopy (US) | Client portal and requests (catalog; not re-checked) | Not checked |
The platforms (not chasing today)
| Tool | Status |
|---|---|
| Xero Tax Manager in Xero HQ, Xero Practice Manager | Tracks MTD obligations across clients. No client nudges or chasing mentioned in Xero's April 2026 MTD post. XPM lacks a native client portal (secondary). This is the biggest platform risk: one Xero feature release could remove the gap. |
| Client-side MTD software (Xero Simple ~£7/mo, Sage Sole Trader Free, Clear Books free, bridging tools) | Clients who keep their own digital records need less chasing. Every client who adopts one shrinks the job. |
Proposals and onboarding (adjacent, avoid)
Socket won Xero's 2026 UK Practice App of the Year as a proposals and onboarding suite. Ignition won Global Practice App. Onboarding is taken. Stay on the quarterly chase.
2.3 Vitamin or painkiller?
Painkiller for small practices with MTD clients, and a vitamin for everyone else.
- Painkiller: "I have 90 landlord and sole-trader clients on MTD. Every quarter I send 90 emails, 40 people ignore them, I chase 3 more times from my own phone, rental statements arrive 3 weeks late, and I key a number in wrong at 5pm on a Friday." That paraphrases AccountingWEB community posts from Aug–Sept 2026. It costs staff hours and, from April 2027, clients' penalty points.
- Vitamin: year-end document collection for a firm that already has a suite. It's nice, and they already own it.
- Test: if DocChase disappeared the week before 7 Nov, what would the practice lose? For the MTD chaser: the deadline board, the chase schedule and the late list, in the middle of a quarter. That's a real switching cost. For a generic portal, it's "we'd use Karbon's".
2.4 Market size: venture-scale, lifestyle, or a feature?
Bottom-up (rough):
- MTD IT taxpayers: ~864,000 expected from April 2026, growing by about 1 million from April 2027 (secondary figure) and more from April 2028. About 69% of first-wave sign-ups were done by agents (snippet).
- Suppose ~1.3M agent-represented MTD clients by 2028, spread over ~15,000–25,000 practices and bookkeepers (unverified). At ~£0.50 per MTD client a month, the ceiling for a standalone chaser is ~£8M a year, and most of it is already covered by suites.
- Realistic share for DocChase: 200 practices (~1–1.5% of practices) = $20k MRR. That's the Tier B target, not a venture outcome.
Answer: a lifestyle-to-small business, and in the long run a feature that Xero, Content Snare or a suite can absorb. Build it to be profitable and low-operations, and plan an exit route (a sale to a suite or to Content Snare) as a real option, not a dream.
2.5 Geography: why UK first, and only UK
- UK: a new, dated mandate (MTD IT), a proven app store (Xero UK), English, one tax authority, and a leader that is strong but small (9 staff, estimated).
- Australia and New Zealand: Content Snare's and FileInvite's home markets, with no equivalent new quarterly mandate found. Skip.
- US: TaxDome, Karbon and Canopy dominate, and tax season is annual. Skip.
- India: monthly GST rhythm, but a price ceiling near ~$10/mo and six or more local CA suites with WhatsApp reminders. Skip.
