One-Page Brief

Verdict

As described, a client document and information collection portal for accountants, lawyers, mortgage brokers and immigration consultants has about a 2% chance of reaching $10k MRR by month 24 and about 1% of reaching $20k MRR (Tier B). It is not fundable in its current form, and it doesn't need to be. It is a category with a well-reviewed, ISO 27001-certified leader (Content Snare), and the feature is bundled into every practice-management suite (Karbon, TaxDome, Canopy, BrightManager).

Cut to one job, one country and one deadline rhythm, it improves. The quarterly records chaser for small UK practices with Making Tax Digital for Income Tax (MTD IT) clients reaches $10k MRR at about 8% (~15 hrs/week) or 15% (full-time), and Tier B at about 2% / 6%. Those odds are modest because the leader is already there. See 01 and WHAT-TO-DO-AND-AVOID.md.

No as described. Go, small, as the MTD quarterly records chaser for small UK practices, with a day-60 kill test.

The five things that matter

  1. "Document collection" is a crowded feature, not a market. Content Snare has done it since 2016, is estimated at $990K ARR with 9 staff (Latka estimate), has 73 reviews at 4.95 on the Xero App Store UK, holds ISO 27001, and starts at $35/mo. Karbon Business ($89/user/mo) and TaxDome (~$1,000/user/yr, secondary source) include client requests with automatic reminders. A generic portal is a late clone.
  2. MTD for Income Tax created a new, recurring chase that practices hate. Since 6 April 2026, sole traders and landlords over £50k must send quarterly updates. The threshold drops to £30k in April 2027 and £20k in April 2028 (GOV.UK, verified). One annual chase became four. At the first deadline (7 Aug 2026), 436,000 filed out of ~864,000 expected (HMRC via trade press, verified). Agents did ~69% of sign-ups (snippet). AccountingWEB's headline: "MTD didn't add tax work. It added the chasing."
  3. The leader saw it first. Content Snare's June 2026 post says "MTD has turned client information collection into a year-round task", and it already sells recurring quarterly requests, with 20 MTD templates in the works. Glasscubes offers MTD Assist "free for firms". BrightManager sends automated record requests by email and SMS. You'd be competing on price per client and on the client's phone experience, not on a new idea.
  4. The quarterly rhythm is good for the business, and the thresholds are an expansion engine. A practice renews at every deadline if its clients came in on time. Its MTD client count grows in 2027 and 2028 without any new sales. Per-client pricing captures that growth automatically.
  5. The buying calendar is narrow. UK practices won't evaluate tools in January (Self Assessment peak) or in the fortnight before a quarterly deadline. The one big window is Feb–Apr 2027, before the £30k wave. Being ready for it is the whole first 6 months.

Feature sort (headline)

  • Table stakes: requests and checklists, automatic reminders, a client upload page, templates, branding, secure storage, a Xero Practice Manager client import.
  • Differentiators (narrow): per-MTD-client pricing, a login-free WhatsApp/SMS client flow with "nothing new this quarter", a per-deadline board with a chase log, a late-records list the practice can bill, and (later) chasing only clients whose Xero or QuickBooks books are behind.
  • Distractions: four professions at once, a forms builder, e-signature, proposals, practice management, mobile apps.
  • Liabilities: long-term file storage, AML and ID checks, extracting transactions (bookkeeping), filing to HMRC, charging the end client.

Most likely cause of death

"It's a feature." Content Snare adds per-client pricing or a WhatsApp flow, Glasscubes stays free, and the practices that would pay you are already inside Karbon, TaxDome or BrightManager. Early warning: at day 60, concierge practices won't re-book because "our suite does this".

Next 90 days

Do: run the 7 Nov 2026 quarter by hand for 3–5 practices at £99, then build v1 for the 7 Feb 2027 quarter and pre-sell it in December. See 08. Stop: planning for lawyers, brokers and immigration consultants. Pick UK MTD, or stop.
