10. Verified Research (30 Sept 2026)

This file records the evidence behind docs 00–11 and what it changed.

Method and its limits. This was a single-analyst research run. It started from the catalog's evidence (D4), then fetched primary sources directly where possible (GOV.UK, company pricing pages, Xero pages, Meta's developer docs). The run used 12 web searches out of a budget of 15, plus direct page fetches. The rating scale:

  • Verified: the page was fetched and read on 30 Sept 2026.
  • Snippet-verified: seen only in search-result snippets or summaries, because the page couldn't be fetched. AccountingWEB, TaxDome, IASME and Pixie all refused or failed fetching in this run.
  • Unverified: stated as an analyst estimate.

This run did not use the multi-agent 3-vote review behind CreatorDesk's research file.

10.1 Findings

F1. Content Snare revenue estimate (verified as an estimate)

  • $990K ARR in 2025, 9 employees, founded 2016, Brisbane, Australia. Founder and CEO: James Rose. Funding not disclosed.
  • Latka says explicitly: "We have not recorded a podcast or interview with Content Snare's management; the revenue shown is a GetLatka estimate." The catalog warns Latka can be wrong by several times in either direction.
  • Source: Latka: Content Snare.
  • The catalog says it was built for agencies and later refocused on accountants. The pivot date was not verified in this run.

F2. Content Snare pricing (verified)

PlanAnnual billingMonthly billingActive requestsUsersSMS a month
Basic$35/mo$42/mo20240
Plus$71/mo$85/mo505100
Pro$119/mo$143/mo10010200
Custom$215+/mo$258+/mo200+20+400+
  • All plans: unlimited clients, unlimited reminders, unlimited templates, client portal, Zapier. ISO 27001 certified. 14-day trial, no card. Priced in USD.
  • Source: Content Snare pricing.
  • Open question: whether a recurring quarterly request counts as "active" all year or only while open. It decides how big DocChase's pricing edge really is. Check with a trial account.

F3. Content Snare's UK and MTD focus (verified)

  • Won UK Practice App of the Year at the 2025 Xero App Awards; finalist in New Zealand and Canada.
  • A 16 June 2026 post says "MTD has turned client information collection into a year-round task." Features named: automated follow-ups, recurring requests that repeat each quarter, bulk requests, and 20 MTD-specific templates in development.
  • Xero App Store UK listing: 73 reviews, 4.95 stars. Imports clients from Xero Practice Manager and pushes collected documents back to XPM.
  • Sources: Content Snare: UK focus and Xero award, Content Snare: MTD data-collection software, Xero App Store UK: Content Snare.
  • The AccountingWEB profile (link) returned 403 and was not read.

F4. Xero App Awards 2026 (verified)

  • Posted 4 Sept 2026. Socket (a Xero-first proposals, onboarding and billing suite) won UK Practice App of the Year 2026. Ignition won Global Practice App. Content Snare was a finalist in several practice categories.
  • Source: Xero blog: 2026 App Award winners.

F5. FileInvite (verified as an estimate)

  • $22.8M ARR in 2024 (from $18.8M in 2023), 44 employees, $1.7M raised in 2 rounds (last in 2019), Auckland. Serves loan and insurance applications. Latka's "200,000 customers" field is not credible as paying accounts.
  • Source: Latka: FileInvite. Latka estimate; no company interview.

F6. MTD for Income Tax timetable (verified)

F7. Quarterly periods, deadlines and penalties (verified)

  • Periods are cumulative from 6 April (standard) or 1 April (calendar). Deadlines: 7 Aug, 7 Nov, 7 Feb, 7 May.
  • No penalty points for late quarterly updates in 2026–27. After that, 4 points = £200 penalty.
  • Source: GOV.UK: send quarterly updates (updated 7 Sept 2026).

F8. The first quarter in numbers (verified, one figure snippet-only)

  • ~864,000 expected in the first wave (HMRC figure reported by ByteStart, 24 Feb 2026; verified article, HMRC release not linked).
  • 570,000 signed up; 436,000 filed the first quarterly update by the 7 Aug deadline. HMRC begins enrolling mandated no-shows from Sept 2026. Source: The Accountant, 13 Aug 2026 (verified).
  • ~69% of registrations (393,000) were done by an agent, ~31% (176,000) by taxpayers themselves. Snippet-verified only (AccountingWEB, "Agents do the heavy lifting for MTD's first deadline").
  • ~1,077,000 in the £30k–£50k band from April 2027. Snippet-verified only (search summary; the ByteStart page didn't show it).

F9. Practitioner sentiment (snippet-verified)

  • AccountingWEB headlines, Aug–Sept 2026: "MTD didn't add tax work. It added the chasing", "MTD quarter one leaves firms battered and bruised", "MTD for Income Tax just quadrupled your admin", "Survived the first MTD deadline? 428,000 clients didn't".
  • Quoted snippets: "Getting the client to give you what you need, four times a year instead of once, is the work." "Rental statements turn up three weeks late."
  • MTD Accountability Club, Aug 2026 survey: 61% said Q1 was as expected or easier; confidence about the £30k cohort was 3.9/10.
  • Caveat: several of these are vendor-written "industry insights" posts (Glasscubes wrote the 428,000 one). They show the pain is real and that vendors are chasing it. They are not independent surveys.
  • Sources: search results on accountingweb.co.uk; pages returned 403.

F10. Bundling competitors (mixed verification)

  • Karbon (verified): Team $59 / Business $89 per user per month (annual); client requests and automated reminders only on Business and above. Karbon pricing.
  • TaxDome (secondary): Pro ~$1,000 and Business ~$1,200 per user per year, from third-party pages summarised in search. TaxDome's own page returned 403.
  • BrightManager, formerly AccountancyManager (verified): "Automated Client Emails and Text Messages" requesting records, a GDPR-compliant client portal and e-signature. Irish pricing: Essential €50.75/user/mo monthly. UK GBP price not seen. Bright.
  • Glasscubes MTD Assist (verified): guides clients through the quarterly process; "MTD Assist is free for firms and affordable for clients." 3 Sept 2026. Glasscubes.
  • Xero (verified): the April 2026 MTD post covers Tax Manager in Xero HQ and XPM compliance views, and mentions no client-chasing feature. Xero blog. XPM "lacks a native client portal" (secondary: a competitor's review, snippet only). Xero Simple at £7 + VAT a month (snippet only).
  • TaxNav HQ (automated reminders) and free client-side MTD software (Sage Sole Trader Free, Clear Books) appear in search summaries only.
  • Senta, Pixie, TaxCalc, IRIS: not checked (Pixie's domain failed to resolve).

F11. WhatsApp Business Platform pricing (verified in part)

  • Per-message pricing since 1 July 2025. Charged when a template message is delivered. Utility templates sent inside an open customer-service window are free. Rates change quarterly (1 Jan, 1 Apr, 1 Jul, 1 Oct). The UK is among markets with a higher marketing-message rate from 1 July 2026.
  • UK utility and SMS rates were not verified. The plan assumes ~£0.02–0.05 a message.
  • Source: Meta developer docs: pricing.

F12. The rejected markets (mixed verification)

  • US immigration (verified): Docketwise $80 / $100 / $120 per user per month (annual) includes client questionnaires, client portal and document requests on every plan; SMS from Pro. Docketwise pricing.
  • India CAs (snippet only): QwikCA, CA OMS, Practive, Finexo, 1CA and CaCRM all market WhatsApp reminders and client portals for GST, TDS and ITR. From StatementKit's research (verified there): Vyapar TaxOne sells a comparable CA tool for ₹10,000 a year. See statementkit/research/10.
  • UK mortgage brokers (trade press, snippet only): Acre's client portal lets clients upload documents, complete eID and credit checks, message the broker, and "automatically highlights any missing information".

F13. UK practice counts (secondary, unverified)

  • 12,000+ ICAEW-registered firms; small practices and bookkeepers grew from ~55,000 to ~77,000 since 2018 (a search summary citing Capsule and others). Not checked against ICAEW, ACCA or AAT data.

F14. Cyber Essentials (not verified)

  • The IASME pricing page returned 403. The price for a micro organisation is unverified in this run.

F15. Base-rate proxy (cross-referenced)

  • RevenueCat, State of Subscription Apps 2026: 17.3% of new apps reach $1k monthly revenue within 2 years; 4.6% reach $10k; Business category 1.6% at $10k. Cross-referenced from statementkit/research/10, not re-fetched here. Source: RevenueCat.
  • There is no verified base rate for bootstrapped web B2B micro-SaaS.

10.2 Claims to avoid repeating

  • "Content Snare makes $990K ARR" as a fact. It's a Latka estimate with no company input.
  • "FileInvite has 200,000 customers." It's a Latka field and not credible as paying accounts.
  • "Xero has no client-chasing feature" as permanent. It's true of the April 2026 post only. Re-check at every Xerocon.
  • "Half of taxpayers missed MTD." The 428,000 figure is expected minus filed, published by a vendor. Some of the gap is people who were exempt, deferred or not yet enrolled.
  • "Penalties apply now." No penalty points for late quarterly updates in 2026–27.

10.3 What this changed in the assessment

DocChangeWhy
01Chose UK MTD IT over Indian CAs, US immigration, mortgage brokers and US tax seasonThe only candidate with a new, dated, recurring forcing event (F6–F8). The others each have a bundled incumbent (F12).
01 / WHAT-TO-DOOdds set below StatementKit and DocPress at every levelContent Snare publicly turned to MTD in June 2026 (F3), and Glasscubes is free for firms (F10).
03 / 04Differentiators narrowed to per-client pricing, the login-free phone chase, the deadline board and "chase only what's missing"Reminders, portals, recurring requests and XPM sync are table stakes (F2, F3, F10).
WHAT-TO-DO / 08 / 11Plans built around the 7 Nov 2026 concierge quarter, the 7 Feb 2027 v1 quarter and the Feb–Apr 2027 buying windowDeadlines (F7) and the £30k wave (F6, F8).
02 / 06Market called lifestyle-to-small, and a feature in the long run; exit by sale treated as a real optionLeader at an estimated ~$1M ARR after 9 years (F1); suites bundle it (F10).

10.4 Open questions (next research run)

  1. What share of small UK practices has no suite with a built-in chaser? This is the real addressable market and the biggest unknown.
  2. How Content Snare counts recurring quarterly requests against plan limits, and its GBP pricing.
  3. Glasscubes MTD Assist: what is free for firms, what clients pay, and how many practices use it.
  4. UK per-message rates for WhatsApp utility templates and for SMS.
  5. The ~69% agent share and the ~1.08M April 2027 figure, from HMRC directly.
  6. Senta, Pixie, TaxCalc, IRIS and TaxNav HQ: which already chase MTD clients automatically, and at what price.
  7. Cyber Essentials price, and whether small UK practices ask for ISO 27001 at all.
  8. Whether HMRC's MTD APIs let an authorised agent-side tool read a client's obligation status. It would allow automatic deadline tracking per client.
