These are the features that Airtable teams, consultants and sync-tool reviewers commonly ask for. They're drawn from competitor feature lists (Sync2Sheets, ClickUp to Sheets, Coupler.io, Whalesync), the Airtable Community, and ClickUp's 756-vote Sheets-sync request as a proxy. Each is classified with the same honesty as the stated elements. Being asked for doesn't mean you should build it.
Legend: TS = Table stakes, D = Differentiator, X = Distraction, L = Liability. Priority: P0 = v1, P1 = next, P2 = later, — = don't build.
| Platform | Limit that matters | Consequence for features |
|---|
| Airtable API | 5 requests/sec per base. 50 requests/sec per token across bases. After a 429 error, wait 30 seconds. | Batch writes (10 records per request), queue per base, back off. |
| Airtable monthly calls | Free: 1,000/month per workspace. Team: 100,000/month (then slowed to 2 requests/sec). Business and above: no monthly cap. | Incremental sync and a quota meter are P0. Free-plan Airtable users can't be customers. |
| Airtable records | 1,000 per base (Free), 50,000 (Team), 125,000 (Business) | Sheets holds 10M cells (unverified here). Record volume is fine, but full scans are not. |
| Google Apps Script | 6 min per run. Triggers: 90 min/day (consumer), 6 hr/day (Workspace). 20 triggers per user per script. URL Fetch: 20,000/day (consumer), 100,000/day (Workspace). | The sync engine lives on your server. Apps Script only runs the sidebar and on-open actions. |
| Google OAuth | spreadsheets = sensitive (verification). drive = restricted (verification plus an annual security assessment). drive.file = non-sensitive. | Ask for the narrowest scope that allows background writes. This is a P0 architecture test. |
4.2 Demanded features, classified
A. Core sync (what every buyer assumes)
| Feature | Category | Priority | Notes |
|---|
| Connect Airtable by OAuth, then pick base, table and view | TS | P0 | Use views as filters, so users control scope in Airtable. |
| Scheduled one-way sync (hourly / 15 min) | TS | P0 | Split by plan. |
| Manual "sync now" | TS | P0 | Sync2Sheets puts it on paid tiers only. Include it on all paid plans. |
| Field-type mapping for common types | TS | P0 | Dates, currency and multi-selects break most clones. Get these right. |
| Formula, lookup and rollup fields as read-only | TS | P0 | Never try to write them back. |
| Sync log (what changed, when) | TS | P0 | The first thing support needs. |
| Multiple tables into separate tabs | TS | P0 | Starter 3, Pro 15, Team unlimited. |
B. Two-way and data safety (your edge)
| Feature | Category | Priority | Notes |
|---|
| Two-way sync of edited cells | D | P0 (Pro) | Field-level diff against the last snapshot hash. Write only changed fields. |
| Conflict log with "last edit wins" plus a manual override | D | P0 | Show conflicts in a sheet tab that users can read. |
| Soft-delete (a deleted row is flagged, not destroyed) | D | P0 | Hard deletes are opt-in, per table, with a warning. |
| 7-day restore of Airtable values changed by the sync | D | P1 | Store the diff only, encrypted, and purge after 7 days. |
| New rows in Sheets create Airtable records | D | P0 (Pro) | Needs a stable record-ID column, protected from edits. |
| Protected ID column and header row | TS | P0 | Most sync bugs start with a user sorting or deleting the ID column. |
| Validation before write-back (select options, types) | D | P1 | Reject with a note in the conflict log, and never guess. |
C. Airtable-specific depth
| Feature | Category | Priority | Notes |
|---|
| Quota-aware incremental sync (last-modified filter) plus a monthly API-use meter | D | P0 | The Team plan's 100k cap is shared with every integration. This is a selling point in itself. |
| Linked records shown as names, with IDs kept hidden | D | P1 | Two-way on linked records is P2. |
| Attachments as URLs or thumbnails | TS | P2 | Airtable attachment URLs expire (unverified detail). Show a refresh note. |
| Webhook-driven near-real-time sync | D | P2 (Team) | Upsell. Not needed for v1. |
| Multiple bases into one sheet | D | P2 | Consultant use case. |
| Airtable interface or comment sync | X | — | Low value and a complex API. |
D. Reporting and downstream
| Feature | Category | Priority | Notes |
|---|
| Scheduled snapshots (append a dated copy each week) | D | P1 | Finance teams want history. Airtable doesn't keep it cheaply. |
| "Ready for Looker Studio" clean tab (typed columns, no merged cells) | D | P1 | An SEO and use-case hook: "Airtable to Looker Studio". |
| Charts or dashboards inside the add-on | X | — | Sheets and Looker Studio already do this. |
| AI summaries of the data | X | — | No buyer asked for it, and it adds cost. |
| BigQuery or warehouse destination | X now / D later | P2+ | Pivot A territory only if Sheets demand stalls. |
E. Team, admin and consultants
| Feature | Category | Priority | Notes |
|---|
| Several Google users sharing one sync (Team) | D | P1 | Needed for the $79 tier. |
| Audit log of who changed what through the sync | D | P1 (Team) | Ops managers ask "who changed this price?" |
| Consultant console (all client syncs, health status) | D | P2 | Unlocks the partner channel. |
| Domain-wide install for Workspace admins | TS | P2 | The Marketplace supports admin installs. It helps with teams. |
| SSO or SAML, SOC 2 report | X for now | — | That's the enterprise segment you're not targeting. |
F. Trust, billing and support
| Feature | Category | Priority | Notes |
|---|
| Clear permission explanation in the sidebar | TS | P0 | IT admins read scopes at install. |
| Error emails with a fix link ("Airtable token expired → reconnect") | TS | P0 | Silent failures lose customers. |
| Trial-to-paid in-add-on checkout (Paddle or Stripe) | TS | P0 | No Google payment system. You handle billing. |
| Status page | TS | P1 | Cheap, and it earns trust. |
| "Save Airtable seats" calculator | D / L | P1, careful wording | Great for converting buyers. Word it as "share with people outside Airtable" (see AVOID #9). |
4.3 Other sources people will ask for (and the answer)
| Asked for | Answer | Why |
|---|
| ClickUp | Month 18+ at the earliest, as source #2 | Strong incumbent. Enter only with an engine that's already proven. |
| Notion | No | Sync2Sheets, Notion to Sheets, SyncSheetsPro and Addsync. |
| HubSpot, Jira, Linear | No | Native syncs exist. |
| Stripe | Maybe, as a one-way "finance pack" later | Thin demand signal. It's a different buyer. |
| SmartSuite, Baserow, NocoDB (Airtable alternatives) | Consider as source #2 | Similar data model, and likely no dedicated add-on. Not checked. |
4.4 Net effect
Of roughly 40 requested features, about 14 belong in v1 or the next release. The core is sync plus safety plus quota awareness. Everything else is either upsell (real-time, consultants), reporting that Sheets already does, or other people's products.
