3. Feature-by-Feature Scrutiny (The Idea's Stated Elements)

Categories:

  • Table stakes (TS): customers expect it. It earns nothing, but its absence costs you.
  • Differentiator (D): a real reason to choose you over the alternatives.
  • Distraction (X): built but unlikely to move revenue or retention.
  • Liability (L): creates support, compliance, platform or trust risk.

The catalog entry (C3) states 8 elements. Some sit in two buckets. The primary one comes first.

3.1 Classification table

#Stated elementCategoryReasoning
1A Google Sheets add-on (Editor add-on with a sidebar)TSThe expected form factor. Every competitor has one. The sidebar is for setup: pick base, pick tables, map fields, pick schedule. The work happens on your server.
2Sold on the Google Workspace MarketplaceD (channel) / L (gatekeeper)Free listing, and buyers search by exact need. BudgetSheet names Marketplace search as a main channel. But Google controls ranking, review and OAuth verification. A sensitive-scope verification delay can hold launch for weeks (timeline unverified).
3"One popular tool" as the sourceD only if the source is right. L if it's HubSpot, Jira or Linear.See the source-tool scan in 02. Native syncs make three of the catalog's examples dead on arrival. Airtable is the pick.
4Scheduled one-way syncTSCoupler.io does it from $24/mo (daily), and the free incumbent claims it. It has to be flawless, but it isn't why anyone pays you.
5Two-way syncD / LThe reason to pay over Coupler.io, and the reason Sync2Sheets charges $15–49. Also the biggest liability: conflicts, deletes, linked records and type mismatches. It needs a conflict log, soft-delete and restore in v1, not later.
6Sync2Sheets-style pricing ($15 / $23 / $49)TS → adjustThe shape is right (three tiers split by sync frequency and table count, with annual discounts). Airtable teams can pay more: $19 / $39 / $79 is recommended. Trial only, no free plan.
7Customers from Marketplace search, Reddit demos and YouTube, with $0 paid marketingDVerified for Sync2Sheets and BudgetSheet. For Airtable, add the Airtable Community and Airtable consultants. It only compounds if you post every week for 6+ months.
8Implied: "any tool, whichever is popular"X / LIf you keep the source open, you end up building a connector platform against Coefficient (654K+), Coupler.io (440K+) and Unito (477K+). Pick one source and stay there for 12 months.

3.2 The catalog's example sources, classified

SourceCategoryReasoning
HubSpotLFree native sync (Data sync by HubSpot, 129K+) and Coefficient (654K+). You'd sell against free and funded.
JiraLAtlassian's own Jira Cloud for Sheets: 3.43M+ installs.
ShopifyX15+ add-ons, including multi-source leaders. There's no gap to own.
StripeXOpen, but demand looks thin (top dedicated add-ons: 234 and 444 installs). One-way only, so there's no two-way moat.
ClickUpX for v1 / fallbackProven demand, but a 4.7★ two-way incumbent with 29K+ installs. Keep it as Pivot B.
CalendlyXZapier covers "new booking → new row". Low value per row.
AirtableDNo native sync, an abandoned ~2★ incumbent, team buyers, and a real technical edge (quota-aware two-way).

3.3 Scoreboard

CategoryCountElements
Table stakes3Sheets add-on form factor, scheduled one-way sync, tiered pricing shape
Differentiator3Right source (Airtable), two-way sync with safety, free organic channels
Distraction1"Any popular tool" open-endedness
Liability3Wrong source (native sync), Google as gatekeeper, two-way without safety

Most of the value is one decision (the source) and one hard feature (safe two-way). Everything else is plumbing that must work.

3.4 "Building to avoid selling": explicit call-outs

  1. A connector framework before a single source ships. It's tempting because "adding sources later is easy". It isn't: every source is its own API quirks, rate limits and support docs. Build one interface, ship one source.
  2. Dashboards and charts inside the add-on. Sheets and Looker Studio already do this. It demos well and earns nothing.
  3. Real-time sync on day one. Webhook-driven sub-minute sync is a Team-tier feature. Start with 15-minute incremental sync and sell the faster sync later.
  4. Perfect field coverage before launch. Ship with the 12 common Airtable field types. Show unsupported fields as read-only text, and add the rest as customers ask.

3.5 What a disciplined v1 looks like

Keep:

  • Airtable OAuth connection, then pick base, tables and view.
  • Field mapping for the common types (text, number, currency, date, single and multi select, checkbox, email, URL, formula as read-only, lookup and rollup as read-only, linked record shown as the primary field).
  • One-way scheduled sync (hourly or 15 minutes), plus two-way on Pro with a conflict log and soft-delete.
  • A sync log, manual refresh, and a quota meter.

Defer: attachments, webhook real-time, multiple bases per sheet, a partner console.

Cut: charts, AI, other sources, a free plan.
