5. Pre-Mortem: It's September 2028 and SheetBridge Is Dead

Three most likely causes of death, ranked by probability. #1 is the quiet one: nothing breaks, the business just never gets big enough to keep going.

Cause #1: The pool was too small (probability ~45% of failure cases)

What happened. The add-on shipped in 10 weeks, and it worked. The listing reached the top 3 for "Airtable Google Sheets" by month 5. Trials settled at 10–15 a month, conversion was a respectable 18%, and monthly churn was 6%. The plateau math capped MRR at about $2.5k, and it sat there from month 14. The founder added ClickUp at month 16 and ran into a 4.7★ incumbent. Motivation ran out before month 24.

Early warning signs

  • Month 4: under 20 trials a month with the listing live and 2 videos a week out.
  • Month 6: organic search trials flat for 2 months straight.
  • Most trials come from Free-plan Airtable users (who can't sync past 1,000 API calls a month anyway).
  • Marketplace installs grow, but installs from Team and Business workspaces are a minority.

Fixable? Partly. You can't make Airtable's user base bigger. You can:

  1. Raise ARPU by pushing the Team tier and consultant accounts.
  2. Add adjacent jobs on the same data: weekly snapshots and Looker Studio-ready tabs (P1 in 04).
  3. Add a second source only after the engine is proven (month 18 gate).

Or accept a profitable $2–3k business, or sell it.

Cause #2: A data-integrity incident, or support that ate the week (probability ~30%)

What happened. A customer sorted their Sheet and deleted the ID column, and the two-way sync treated 1,800 rows as deleted. Soft-delete was "on the roadmap". The customer posted in the Airtable Community and on Reddit, and left a 1-star review. The rating dropped from 4.8 to 4.1, and ranking fell with it. Separately, a naive 15-minute full scan used up three customers' Airtable Team API quotas. Airtable throttled all their integrations, and they blamed SheetBridge. At ~15 hrs/week, support took 8 hours a week by month 9.

Early warning signs

  • Any sync write that can't be undone.
  • API calls per customer per day rising with table size, not with the number of changes.
  • Support tickets per 100 customers above 10 a month.
  • More than 1 in 20 reviews mentioning "data", "deleted" or "overwrote".

Fixable? Yes, if it's built in from v1:

  • a protected ID column;
  • soft-delete by default;
  • a conflict log;
  • a 7-day restore;
  • incremental sync and a quota meter.

After a public incident, it's only partly fixable. Reviews stay.

Cause #3: A platform moved (probability ~25%)

What happened. One of these, or two together:

  • (a) Airtable shipped a native "Sync to Google Sheets", as Atlassian, HubSpot, Linear and Asana have. Or Airtable tightened API limits on Team plans further.
  • (b) Google changed add-on rules. For example, re-verification of the spreadsheets scope took 6 weeks during which new installs were blocked, or Marketplace ranking shifted towards Google's own Gemini-driven data connectors.
  • (c) A funded horizontal tool added cheap two-way Airtable sync at $15/mo.

Early warning signs

  • An Airtable roadmap post, beta or job listing mentioning Google Sheets or "sync out".
  • A Google email about OAuth scope policy or re-verification.
  • Coupler.io, Unito or Whalesync announcing a lower-priced Airtable ↔ Sheets tier.
  • UpSys (the maker of ClickUp to Sheets) investing in its new Airtable add-on.

Fixable? Partly. You can't stop a native sync. You can pick jobs the platform does badly:

  • two-way with conflict safety;
  • quota awareness;
  • snapshots and history;
  • consultant multi-client management.

Keep 6 months of costs covered, and keep the engine ready for a second source.

Honourable mentions (less likely, still real)

  • Airtable's own trajectory. If Airtable keeps moving up-market towards enterprise and AI, the SMB Team-plan base, your buyer, may shrink. Airtable user and customer numbers were not verified.
  • Terms risk. If Airtable treats "editing through Sheets without a seat" as seat circumvention, the core pitch becomes a liability. Airtable's terms were not checked.
  • Payment and billing admin. There's no Google billing, so you run Paddle or Stripe, sales tax or VAT, and failed payments yourself. It's small, but it's recurring work.
  • Founder fatigue. A $2–3k plateau at ~15 hrs/week is a real outcome. Decide in advance (month 12 gate) whether that's a success or a stop.
