1. Verdict

Why a ladder instead of one target

This idea is assessed at six MRR levels instead of one fixed number. Outcomes for small agency tools are skewed: a few companies reach millions (DashThis, AgencyAnalytics), and most stall in the low hundreds of thousands a year or below (Reportz.io). A single "$20k MRR" number hides the useful information: how likely each level is, and what each level costs in time.

The anchor: there is no verified base rate

  • No verified base rate exists for bootstrapped B2B micro-SaaS reaching a given MRR within 24 months. The 30 Sept 2026 catalog tested every common statistic, and none survived verification (catalog, Part A).
  • The consumer-app base rate used elsewhere in this portfolio (RevenueCat: 17.3% of new subscription apps reach $1k/month within 2 years, 4.6% reach $10k) is for mobile consumer apps. It isn't comparable, so it isn't used here.

What the odds are anchored on instead (see research/10):

  • DashThis: $230K/month in 2021 and ~2,600 customers at ~$135/month, with 3% monthly revenue churn, CAC ~$450 and payback ~3 months (CEO interview, founder-reported, Jan 2022). Bootstrapped. Latka estimates $5.3M ARR in 2023.
  • Reportz.io: $220K ARR with 2 staff in July 2025, founded 2017 (Latka estimate). That's roughly $18K MRR after 8 years.
  • AgencyAnalytics: $15.7M ARR and 143 staff in 2025, founded 2010 (Latka estimate).
  • ⚠ The catalog warns that Latka is unreliable for exact figures. Use these only for rough size.

Three things push the odds up:

  • Agencies are businesses that pay monthly and churn slowly. DashThis's 3% monthly revenue churn is good for small-business software.
  • The numbers needed are small: $10k MRR is ~50 agencies at ~$200 a month.
  • Margin is ~90%+. The APIs are free to call, and there's no heavy compute.

Four things push them down:

  • The leader charges $20 per client with 85+ integrations and AI included, and Looker Studio is free.
  • AI commentary is now free through official Google Ads and Meta Ads MCP servers, and it's included by every incumbent.
  • API churn is constant. Meta's 12 Jan 2026 attribution-window removal broke reports silently across the category.
  • Even the wedge is partly covered: WhatConverts (Jobber revenue, agency plans), CallRail (Jobber), ServiceTitan (native ad ROI) and AgencyAnalytics (LSA leads).

Odds at each MRR level (reached by month 24)

The alternative columns assume full-time effort. At ~15 hrs/week, multiply them by about 0.7.

Recommended means booked-job reports for US agencies serving home-services contractors, as set out in WHAT-TO-DO-AND-AVOID.md, with the 3 conditions met:

  • access to home-services agencies (you've worked in one, or can book 12–15 owner calls in 3 weeks);
  • you build and maintain the API integrations yourself;
  • a steady release and support cadence for 24 months.

If any one condition is missing, multiply the recommended odds by about 0.6. With no agency access at all, don't start.

These are judgment estimates anchored to the data points above, not computed statistics.

Notes on the alternatives:

  • Local SEO agencies buy rankings, Google Business Profile and review reports. BrightLocal, Local Falcon, Whitespark and AgencyAnalytics already cover them (competitor features unverified this run), and the buyers are among the most price-sensitive.
  • Amazon Ads agencies need ad data plus Seller Central sales for TACoS. AgencyAnalytics already lists Amazon Ads. Amazon-native tools with agency modes exist, and sales data sits behind Amazon's data-protection rules for developers (details unverified). It's a real niche, but not an empty one.
  • Healthcare marketing agencies face HIPAA. Lead and call data can be health information, so you'd need business associate agreements, security reviews and more legal exposure than a reporting tool can carry at this price. Google's automated LSA lead credits also exclude healthcare.
  • One non-English market can work, but big markets already have a local leader. Brazil has Reportei (Portuguese, from ~R$64/month). Smaller markets are small, and it needs a native founder with an agency network. Its odds are the best of the alternatives only for such a founder.
  • As described is the general category. It's where DashThis and AgencyAnalytics spent 10–15 years building connector lists and content. A new entrant has no reason to be chosen.

How to read the ladder

  • $1k–3k is a realistic outcome. It takes 5–15 agencies, which your own network plus a few community posts can deliver if the pain is real.
  • $5k–10k needs a channel beyond your network: a Jobber App Marketplace listing, a partnership with an agency coaching community, or strong niche SEO.
  • $20k and above needs ~100 agencies in one niche. That may be most of the reachable market (size unverified). It's a stretch in 24 months.
  • The odds fall fastest between $3k and $10k. That's where a network-driven start usually runs out and a real channel has to take over.

Portfolio definitions (for comparison with other ideas)

TierDefinitionRecommended, ~15 hrs/weekRecommended, full-timeAs described
Tier A (venture)$1M ARR within 36 months, ≥70% gross margin, ≥50% month-12 logo retention<0.5%<1%<0.5%
Tier B (profitable business)$20k+ MRR within 24 months, profitable, ≥80% gross margin, ≥70% month-3 retention~3%~6%<1%

Tier B sits just below the $20k rung. Margin (~92%) and retention (agency tools churn slowly) are fine. Volume is the problem: ~100 paying agencies in one niche.

How this compares with the other ideas in this portfolio: lower than StatusLens, TradeLedger, AccessCheck and DocPress at every rung, and similar to WaiverWorks at the top. The reasons are a crowded category with a $20-per-client leader, free AI substitutes, and a wedge that's already partly covered by call-tracking vendors. Its strengths are the good churn profile of agency software and near-zero running costs.

Fundable in current form?

No. A general agency reporting tool in 2026 is a crowded, commoditising category with no route to venture scale for a new entrant. See 06-fundability.md. It doesn't need funding either: the build is small, and the first customers can be served by hand.

One-paragraph verdict

The category has made real money for companies that started a decade ago. DashThis and AgencyAnalytics show agencies pay every month and stay. But the idea as written is a copy of their product, launched into a market where the leader includes 85 integrations and AI summaries for $20 a client, Looker Studio is free, and official Google and Meta MCP servers let agencies get AI-written reports without buying anything. A new general tool would add upkeep, not a reason to switch. The only version worth testing moves from clicks to booked revenue: for agencies serving home-services contractors, join LSA leads, calls and ad spend to jobs and invoices in Jobber or Housecall Pro, and show the contractor what each dollar bought and which leads they failed to book. Even that space is partly taken by WhatConverts, CallRail and ServiceTitan. On those terms, $1k–3k MRR is a reasonable expectation, $5k–10k is possible with a channel beyond your own network, and $20k is a long shot. Without access to home-services agencies, the answer is No.
