7. What's Missing: The Gap Between Built and Paid, Renewed, Referred

Assumption: nothing is built yet. So these are gaps between the idea and a business.

7.1 Gaps to pay

GapWhy it blocks paymentFix
No defined buyer"Merchants selling into the EU" includes single-brand stores that will never payPick one: multi-brand retailers with 200+ SKUs from 10+ brands, German-speaking first.
No pricing modelCompetitors anchor at free–$15. Undefined pricing drifts to that anchor.See the pricing table below. Price by catalogue size and supplier workflow, not by "compliance".
No reason to pick you over 15 appsEvery listing says "GPSR block, bulk edit, languages"Lead with the recurring outcome: "Collect GPSR data from all your brands automatically. See every product that's missing it."
Free native alternativeShopify's Disclosures metafieldThe free plan is the gap scan. It shows how far the store is from compliant, which native metafields can't.
Trust in a small, unknown developerMerchants hand over product write access for a legal matterA clear data page, native metafields (no lock-in), a named founder, a fast support promise, and a "what this app does not do" section.

Suggested pricing (verify with pilots):

PlanPriceForIncludes
Free$0Every installCatalogue gap scan, 1 brand profile, storefront block on up to 25 products
Starter$19/mo or $190/yrUp to 500 productsUnlimited brand profiles, vendor rules, warnings library, CSV, storefront block
Growth$49/mo or $490/yrUp to 5,000 productsSupplier request portal, weekly gap email, compliance evidence PDF, marketplace exports (from month 7)
Scale$99/mo or $990/yrUnlimited, multi-storeFlow triggers, multi-store, priority support, API (later)

The blended target is ~$32 list and ~$30 after annual discounts. The Growth tier is the business: it's where the differentiator lives.

7.2 Gaps to renew

GapFix
The job ends after setupAnchor on a weekly job: new-SKU gap alerts, supplier chasers, recall matches, deadline alerts.
Honest native storage means easy exitKeep native metafields (it's right, and it builds trust). Make the workflow the value, not the storage.
Finished small stores cancelLet them downgrade to Free automatically instead of uninstalling. They'll keep the listing review and come back at the next deadline.
Monthly billing churns fasterPush annual plans (two months free). Offer annual in the "catalogue complete" moment.
Store closuresUnfixable. Target stores trading for 1+ year with 200+ SKUs. They close less often (assumption).
Support delaysA 24-hour first-response promise. A help centre written from the first 50 tickets.

7.3 Gaps to refer

GapFix
Nothing visible to other merchantsThe supplier portal is visible to brands. Every request a retailer sends shows the brand a well-made form with "powered by StoreComply". Brands that sell direct on Shopify are the next installs.
No review engineAsk for a review at the "100% complete" moment. Never incentivise reviews (Shopify rules).
No partner channelEU responsible-person services, compliance consultants and Shopify agencies in DACH. Give them a partner dashboard and a revenue share (Shopify Partner referrals).
No contentOne page per regulation and deadline ("GPSR for toy retailers on Shopify", "GARAN label checklist"). App Store listing SEO first, website SEO second.

7.4 Non-product gaps

Distribution

  • Primary: App Store search in English and German, then Dutch, French, Italian and Spanish listings. Keyword work on "GPSR", "Produktsicherheit", "Hersteller Angaben", "EU responsible person".
  • Secondary: a deadline calendar. Be live and badge-ready 3–6 months before each new EU rule touches storefronts or catalogues. Revoq launched 3 months before the withdrawal deadline and has 561 reviews (10, R4).
  • Tertiary: RP services and agencies as partners.
  • Channels that burn time or cash: paid ads, cold email (both failed for DropCommerce), and Facebook groups beyond answering questions.

Positioning

  • Current: "a back-office compliance app for regulatory information". Accurate, but generic.
  • Better: "GPSR for retailers who sell other brands. Collect manufacturer and safety data from every supplier, see what's missing, and show it on every product page and marketplace."
  • One sentence, one buyer, one outcome.

Sales motion

  • Product-led: install, free gap scan, upgrade.
  • Founder-led onboarding calls for the first 30 paying merchants. That's also how you get the first 5 reviews and the Built for Shopify badge.
  • No outbound sales after day 45, which suits limited weekly hours.
AreaRequirement
ClaimsNever "makes you compliant", "guaranteed" or "legally approved". Say "displays the product-safety information you provide". Shopify's BFS rules also ban false claims.
AdviceWarning templates and checklists are information, not legal advice. Include a clear disclaimer, and a "consult a compliance professional" link.
Responsible personDon't act as one. It's a legal role with duties to authorities. Refer to partners.
Data protection (GDPR)You process merchant data plus supplier contact data (names, emails). Publish a data processing agreement. Use EU hosting. Delete data after uninstall (Shopify's mandatory GDPR webhooks).
Shopify Partner termsApp Store rules, the mandatory privacy webhooks, billing through the Shopify Billing API only.
LiabilityA limitation-of-liability clause in your terms. Consider professional indemnity insurance once revenue passes ~$3k MRR (cost not verified).

Team

  • Not provided. For this wedge you need, at minimum:
    • one developer fluent in Shopify apps (React Router/Remix app template, Polaris, App Bridge, theme app extensions, metafields and metaobjects, Billing API, GDPR webhooks);
    • one German-speaking person for the listing, onboarding and support, either a partner or a paid part-time contractor;
    • optionally, an EU product-compliance advisor (an RP service owner is ideal) to review the warning templates.

Metrics and instrumentation

  • No success metrics defined. Minimum set:
    • installs per week by source (search, category, partner);
    • install-to-paid;
    • activation (gap scan run and 1+ brand profile assigned within 7 days);
    • supplier requests sent and completed;
    • month-1 and month-3 paid retention;
    • uninstall reasons;
    • reviews per month;
    • Built for Shopify metrics (Web Vitals, Lighthouse impact).
