8. If I Were You: The Next 90 Days

The single most important thing

Get 15 Airtable teams paying for Airtable ↔ Sheets sync by day 90, with zero data-loss incidents.

  • Source: Airtable only.
  • Buyer: ops teams of 10–200 staff on Airtable's Team or Business plan, plus Airtable consultants.
  • Job: "Our Airtable base, live in Google Sheets, both ways, so the people who live in spreadsheets stop asking for CSV exports."
  • How: start by hand. Set up the sync for 5 teams with a script or a Make scenario, and charge for it. Automate only what you've done by hand at least 5 times.

The plan fits limited weekly hours. Each block assumes ~15 hrs/week, and full-time compresses it to about 6 weeks.

Week-by-week

WeeksGoalExit criteria
1–2Discovery and competitor teardown. 15 calls with Airtable teams and 3–5 consultants. Ask: how do you get Airtable data into Sheets today, how often, who does it, which plan are you on, and have you hit API limits? Install and break the free incumbent, Coupler.io, and the Whalesync and Unito trials. The top 3 sync pains written down in users' words, with hours per week attached. A list of field types and actions that break competitors.
3–4Concierge sync. For 5 teams, set up a hand-built sync (one-way, or two-way on one table) for $39/month. Register the domain and write the privacy policy, homepage and permissions page. Start Google OAuth verification now.5 paying. If fewer than 3 will pay, the pain isn't strong enough. Try consultants as the buyer, once.
5–6Architecture test: can server-side scheduled writes work with drive.file plus the current-sheet scope (non-sensitive)? If not, justify spreadsheets (sensitive). Build the core: Airtable OAuth, incremental pull, field mapping, sync log, quota meter.A 10k-record table syncs incrementally using under 200 API calls a day.
7–8Two-way with safety: protected ID column, field-level diff, conflict log, soft-delete, and new rows creating records. Paddle checkout, 7-day trial. Move the concierge teams onto the product.5 concierge teams running self-serve for 7 days with zero data-loss incidents.
9–10Listing and content. Marketplace listing (title, screenshots and a video all say "Airtable ↔ Google Sheets"). 4 YouTube demos (inventory, content calendar, CRM, hiring). 3 SEO pages. 5 community answers a week. F5Bot alerts on "Airtable" + "Google Sheets".Verification passed and the listing live by day 75. 30 trials started.
11–12Measure and decide.15 paying, trial-to-paid ≥15%, zero data-loss incidents, sync success ≥99.5%. Hit: continue to the roadmap. Miss: see the kill criteria.

Kill criteria (write these down now)

  • Under 3 paying from the concierge by day 30, after trying consultants too: stop, or switch the source to ClickUp as a two-way #2.
  • Under 3 self-serve payers by day 100 with the listing live: the pool or the listing is wrong. Rewrite the listing once, then stop.
  • Any unrecoverable data-loss incident: freeze two-way until soft-delete and restore are proven on real data.

Don't respond to a miss by adding sources or features.

The one thing to stop doing

Stop keeping the source open. "Any popular tool" is how you end up building a connector platform against Coefficient, Coupler.io and Unito, with none of their resources. HubSpot, Jira and Linear already sync natively, and Notion and ClickUp have strong incumbents. Pick Airtable, and say "Airtable" in every sentence.

A close second: stop planning a free plan. Sync2Sheets roughly tripled paid signups when it removed its free plan.

What stays on the long-term roadmap (only after proof)

  1. Weekly snapshots and Looker Studio-ready tabs (reporting depth on the same data).
  2. The Team tier: webhook near-real-time sync, multiple Google users, audit log.
  3. A consultant console and partner programme.
  4. Then, after month 18: a second source on the same engine (ClickUp, or an Airtable alternative such as SmartSuite).
