7. What's Missing: The Gap Between Built and Paid, Renewed, Referred

Assumption: nothing is built yet. So these are gaps between the idea and a business.

7.1 Gaps to pay

GapWhy it blocks paymentFix
No chosen sourceYou can't write a listing, a video or a price for "one popular tool"Airtable. Every asset says "Airtable ↔ Google Sheets".
No reason to pay over free or cheapThe free incumbent and Coupler.io's free tier do a one-way pullPaid value = two-way + 15-minute refresh + safety + quota awareness. Show all four on the listing's first screenshot.
No pricingUndefined$19 / $39 / $79 a month, or 10× monthly for annual. 7-day trial, no card. No free plan (Sync2Sheets lesson).
No billing railGoogle doesn't process add-on payments (no billing found in Marketplace docs; the listing is free)Paddle (merchant of record, handles VAT and sales tax) or Stripe plus a tax tool. Sync2Sheets uses Paddle.
No trust signalsIT admins read scopes. Ops leads fear data loss.The narrowest scopes, a plain-English permissions page, a security page, a data-flow diagram, and "we never hard-delete by default".
No money outcome"Live sync" is a feature, not a reason"Replaces 2 hours of CSV exports a week" and "12 people edit without Airtable seats". Put a number on each.

7.2 Gaps to renew

GapFix
Migration-only customers (they use it once to leave Airtable)Filter at onboarding ("What will you use this for?"), and offer a one-off export at a flat fee instead of a subscription.
Silent failures (expired token, renamed field)Email plus a banner in the Sheet within 1 hour, with a one-click fix link.
No switching costSnapshot history, conflict logs, and consultant multi-client setups accumulate over time.
Seasonal use (events, hiring)Push annual plans at 10× monthly, and offer a pause instead of cancel.
Quota fights with other integrationsThe quota meter plus a "low-API mode" (hourly, changed rows only).

7.3 Gaps to refer

GapFix
Nothing visible to othersA small "Synced from Airtable by SheetBridge" note in a hidden tab's header, which users can switch off on paid plans.
No partner motionAn Airtable consultant programme: free partner account, 20% recurring, and a client-health console.
No free hookFree web tools: an "Airtable API quota calculator" and an "Airtable → CSV → Sheets" guide with a template. These are SEO magnets.
No review habitAn in-app review ask at day 14 of paid use, only after 10+ successful syncs.

7.4 Non-product gaps

Distribution

  • Channels that work for this category (verified for Sync2Sheets and BudgetSheet):
    • Marketplace search;
    • SEO on the exact job ("Airtable to Google Sheets");
    • YouTube demos targeting that exact keyword;
    • Reddit demo videos;
    • niche communities and Facebook groups;
    • F5Bot keyword alerts to answer threads fast.
  • Airtable-specific: the Airtable Community forum, r/Airtable, Airtable consultants and the Airtable partner directory (programme details not verified).
  • Channels that burn cash: Google Ads on "Airtable sync" (competing with Zapier, Unito and Whalesync), and lifetime-deal sites.

Positioning

  • Weak: "Sync any tool to Google Sheets."
  • Better: "Your Airtable base, live in Google Sheets, both ways. For the people on your team who live in spreadsheets."
  • One sentence, one source, one outcome.

Sales motion

  • Self-serve only, through the trial and in-add-on checkout.
  • Founder-led onboarding calls for the first 20 teams, to learn where sync breaks.
  • Consultants get a short call and a partner account. There's no sales team at any stage.

Compliance and platform rules

AreaRequirement
Google OAuth verificationspreadsheets is sensitive: a verified domain, privacy policy, homepage, demo video of the OAuth flow, and a scope justification. drive is restricted: all of that plus an annual security assessment by an approved assessor. drive.file is non-sensitive.
Google API user data policyDisclose data use. Use Google user data only for the add-on's function. No selling or ads. (The policy's detailed "Limited Use" terms weren't re-read for this assessment.)
Marketplace listingFree to list. App review applies (requirements not detailed here). Listing accuracy, support contact, privacy and terms links.
Airtable APIRate limits, monthly call caps and the developer terms. Airtable's terms on seats and on third-party write-back were not checked. Read them before launch.
Data protectionGDPR and UK GDPR for EU and UK customers (you're a processor of their records in transit). Sign a DPA on request. Keep only IDs, hashes and a 7-day encrypted diff.
BillingPaddle as merchant of record removes most VAT and sales-tax work. With Stripe, you need a tax tool.

Team

One person can do this, if they can build and run a small backend (see condition 1 in WHAT-TO-DO-AND-AVOID.md). The hardest skill isn't coding. It's writing sync logic that never loses data, and then making videos every week.

Metrics and instrumentation

Minimum set:

  • Activation: first successful sync within 10 minutes of install.
  • Trial-to-paid.
  • Monthly logo churn, and the share of payers on annual.
  • Trials per month by source (Marketplace, YouTube, SEO, community, partner).
  • Sync success rate, target ≥99.5%.
  • Conflicts per 1,000 writes.
  • Support tickets per 100 customers.
  • Average Airtable API calls per customer per day.
