9. Assumptions and Open Inputs

The idea arrived as one catalog row with evidence and risks. Team, hours per week, geography, stage, budget and ecosystem access were not supplied. Here's what I assumed, and how the verdict changes if each assumption is wrong.

9.1 Assumptions made

InputAssumption usedIf actually different…
StageIdea. No code, no users, no revenue.A working Klaviyo app with even 5 paying brands would outweigh most of this document. Send the numbers.
Team1 developer, no Klaviyo-agency or Shopify-brand networkAn agency partner or an ex-agency co-founder is the biggest positive change: roughly +0.4x on every rung.
Hours per weekTwo scenarios: ~15 hrs/week and full-timeBelow ~10 hrs/week, the agency channel doesn't get sold. Treat the 15-hour column as the ceiling.
GeographySell in USD to US, UK, Canadian and Australian Shopify brandsEU-first adds GDPR weight and a smaller Klaviyo base.
Pricing$39 / $79 / $199 / $299 agency, blended ~$75If brands only pay $19–29, the $10k rung needs ~400 accounts and the odds roughly halve.
Dead weight share~25–40% of active profiles in a typical 2+-year-old Shopify brand's Klaviyo account are dormant, checkout-only or invalidUnverified. If it's under 15%, savings fall below 3x the fee and the wedge weakens sharply. The day-30 audits test this.
Klaviyo prices~$400/mo at 25k, $720 at 50k, $1,440 at 100k active profilesFrom a secondary article (Apr 2026). Klaviyo's own page didn't render prices.
Klaviyo billing changeActive-profile billing since 18 Feb 2025Secondary source only. If billing still counts only emailed profiles, the saving is smaller. Klaviyo's help page does confirm billing is based on active profiles and that suppressed profiles don't count.
Unsuppress / restoreKlaviyo's API lets an app remove suppressions it createdNot verified. If restore is manual or limited, the restore feature becomes an export plus instructions, and trust is harder.
Competitor figuresLatka estimatesTreat as rough size only. The Mailfloss entry is low quality.

9.2 Inputs that would change the verdict most (please supply)

  1. Hours per week available, and for how long.
  2. Do you know any Klaviyo or Shopify email agency that would pilot on 5+ client accounts?
  3. Have you built a Shopify or Klaviyo app before? Listing and review experience cuts months.
  4. Access to one real Klaviyo account with 25k+ profiles to test the audit on this week.
  5. Budget and runway, and whether you'd sell the app at $5–15k MRR.
  6. Your own view of the Mailchimp option. If your network is SMB rather than e-commerce, Mailchimp auto-archive may be the better first platform.

9.3 Definitions used throughout

  • Tier A: $1M ARR within 36 months, ≥70% gross margin, ≥50% month-12 logo retention.
  • Tier B: $20k+ MRR within 24 months, profitable, ≥80% gross margin, ≥70% month-3 retention.
  • Active profile (Klaviyo): a profile that can receive email, whether or not it's marketed to. Suppressed profiles don't count.
  • Dead weight: profiles that are invalid, bot-like, or have had no click, purchase or site visit in the rule window (default 180 days) after receiving at least 10 emails.
  • Revenue churn: MRR lost to cancellations and downgrades in a month ÷ MRR at the start of the month.
  • Max MRR: new MRR per month ÷ monthly revenue churn (Jason Cohen's formula).
