1. Verdict
Definition of "success"
This portfolio uses an MRR ladder ($1k, $3k, $5k, $10k, $20k, $50k by month 24, profitable at that level) plus two fixed tiers, defined in ../../README.md:
- Tier A (venture): $1M ARR within 36 months, ≥70% gross margin, ≥50% month-12 logo retention.
- Tier B (profitable business, the default target): $20k+ MRR within 24 months, profitable, ≥80% gross margin, ≥70% month-3 retention.
Which platform? (scored on the evidence found, 30 Sept 2026)
| Platform | Buyer base | Leader in the bulk / sync job | Marketplace economics | AI / native threat | Score /25 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Xero | 4.92M subscribers (FY26). Practices are a heavy, organised app-buying channel | SaasAnt, but only 37 reviews on Xero. Free bulk-void tools. BulkOps (small) | No revenue share since 2 Mar 2026. Plus tier AUD 245/mo to list. Certification required | Official Xero MCP server (create/update invoices). JAX agents. Bulk void "not planned" by Xero | 18 |
| QuickBooks Online | Largest. Intuit reports 8.9M online paying customers across all online products (FY26, secondary source) | SaasAnt 4,000+ reviews, Transaction Pro, Dancing Numbers | Writes free. Reads metered: Builder tier free with 500k credits, Silver $300/mo | Intuit's official MCP server: 144 tools, full CRUD on 29 record types | 13 |
| Airtable | Not verified | Data Fetcher, since 2020, $20k MRR (2023) | Not verified | Airtable's own AI features (not researched) | 11 |
| Zoho Books | Not verified | Not researched | Not verified | Not researched | — (no evidence) |
| Tally | Large in India (not verified) | Many small Excel-to-Tally utilities (not verified) | No app store comparable to Xero's or Intuit's found (not verified) | — | — (no marketplace) |
Xero wins because the job's leader is weak there, the demand is visible in public (253 votes for bulk void, "not planned"), and Xero's new pricing removes the revenue share. It loses points for free single-purpose tools and an official MCP server.
Probability by version of the idea (judgment estimates)
| Version | $1k | $5k | $10k | $20k | Why |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| As described (generic sync/import app, platform chosen by size) | 30% | 9% | 4% | 1.5% | No buyer, no job, and a leader in every store |
| QuickBooks bulk import/delete (head-on with SaasAnt) | 30% | 8% | 3% | 1% | 4,000+ reviews ahead of you, and Intuit's MCP covers the same actions |
| Airtable API importer (head-on with Data Fetcher) | 30% | 8% | 3% | 1% | The leader has owned the searches since 2020 |
| Xero bulk void only | 35% | 6% | 2% | <1% | Free tools exist. One-off use. |
| Recommended: Xero bulk fix-and-undo for practices, ~15 hrs/week | 45% | 18% | 8% | 3% | Weak leader on Xero, visible demand, practice buyers with repeat work |
| Recommended, full-time | 60% | 28% | 15% | 7% | Same, with faster certification, content and support |
Tier A: under 1% for every version. Tier B: ~2% at ~15 hrs/week, ~6% full-time for the recommended version; under 1% as described.
Base rate: none verified. No platform publishes per-app revenue, and no dataset tracks new marketplace apps to revenue. The anchors are two dated cases (Data Fetcher, SaasAnt) in research/10.
Fundable in current form?
No. It's a single-platform utility with free alternatives for its most-searched action, an AI-agent threat, and episodic use. No investor funds that at idea stage, and it doesn't need funding: the build is small and the platform fees are flat.
One-paragraph verdict
"Sync app on a marketplace" is proven as a category: Data Fetcher and SaasAnt both built real businesses on other people's platforms. But the proof belongs to them. On QuickBooks and Airtable a newcomer arrives years behind a leader with thousands of reviews or the top search results. Xero is the gap. The job's leader barely shows up there, Xero users publicly ask for bulk void and bulk edit, Xero says it won't build them, and Xero's 2026 pricing takes no cut of your revenue. The honest limits: the simplest version of the job is already free, AI agents with Xero's official MCP server can make bulk changes too, and cleanups are episodic. So the product has to be what free tools and agents don't give a practice: a preview, a snapshot, a reverse and a change log, across every client file, for a monthly fee. Build that, sell to practices, and $3–10k MRR is realistic. $20k in 24 months is a long shot.
