2. Market Reality Check
Competitor features and prices come from vendor pages and search summaries fetched on 30 Sept 2026. The number of French Shopify stores and partner-PA wholesale prices are not verified. See research/10.
2.1 Who exactly is the buyer?
"Online sellers who need e-invoicing" is not a buyer. Split French Shopify merchants by what the reform actually asks of them and what they can pay:
| Segment | Rough size (loose estimate) | What the reform asks from 1 Sept 2027 | Willingness to pay | Pain (1–10) | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shopify merchants with B2B orders (trade, wholesale, pro customers), €100k–5M revenue, normal VAT regime | A few thousand | B2B e-invoices through a PA and B2C e-reporting every 10 days, plus the four new invoice mentions | €30–90/mo if it removes the monthly mess | 7–8. Two duties, mixed VAT, an accountant checking | Best buyer. Build for them. |
| B2C-only Shopify merchants, €100k–5M, normal or simplified regime | ~5–10k | B2C e-reporting (every 10 days, or less often on simplified regimes), receiving inbox | €15–40/mo | 6. A recurring duty, but low-visibility until the first rejection | Good second buyer. Essentiel plan. |
| Micro-entrepreneurs in VAT franchise on Shopify | Tens of thousands (most sites are small: 69% of French merchant sites sell under €100k a year) | E-reporting every 2 months, receiving | €0–9/mo. Free PAs cover them. | 3–4 | Avoid as a target. Accept them, don't chase them. |
| Large and mid-size merchants (ETI) | Hundreds | Already live since 1 Sept 2026 | High, but they buy through ERP vendors (Cegid, Sage) and big PAs | 6 | Not yours. Already chose. |
| Experts-comptables (accountants) with e-commerce clients | Thousands of firms | Nothing directly. They carry their clients' mess. | Won't pay much, but decide which tools clients use | 7 | The channel, not the customer. |
| Shopify agencies in France | Hundreds | Nothing directly | Referral fees | 4 | A secondary channel. |
Assumption: the catalog named no buyer. The recommended buyer is the first row, with the second as volume. See 09.
2.2 Competitors, by type
Free and cheap approved platforms (the price anchor)
| Player | What it offers small firms | Why a merchant would stay with it | Why they'd add you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tiime | Free e-invoicing send and receive, no limit (registered PA) | €0, often pushed by the accountant | It doesn't pull Shopify orders, split B2B/B2C or fix Shopify's VAT defaults |
| Abby, Indy, Shine | Free invoicing plus PA features for freelancers and micro firms | €0, simple | Built for freelancers who type invoices, not stores with 1,000 orders |
| Pennylane | Free micro plan. Shopify and PrestaShop connectors. Native PrestaShop partnership. | Accountant-favoured, full accounting | Your most dangerous rival. You win only on Shopify-specific depth and on merchants whose accountant isn't on Pennylane. |
| Qonto | Invoicing from €9/month, bank-bundled | Already their bank | Same gap as Tiime |
| 13 PAs with free plans (as of 22 Apr 2026) | Free send and receive | €0 | None of them is a Shopify app |
Shopify apps (the direct competitors)
| App | What it does for France | Gap |
|---|---|---|
| Sufio | Adds Factur-X data to existing PDF invoices and transmits through "a certified approved platform". A well-known Shopify invoice app (install count not verified). | "Sufio currently supports B2B e-invoicing. Support for B2C e-reporting is planned." When that ships, the gap narrows sharply. |
| Facturii (Huggii / Sinao) | Factur-X generation, legal data collection | Transmission and e-reporting not clearly stated |
| Regulo, Getkanal and small apps | Various Factur-X or accounting exports | Unclear PA and e-reporting coverage |
A developer on the Shopify forum tested several apps and wrote on 3 Sept 2026: "none handles the full journey end to end". The same thread notes that Shopify's order numbers don't follow issue order, and that Shopify applies 20% VAT to all shipping regardless of product mix ("0 to 8% of VAT over-declared").
Other platforms (why not them)
| Platform | Native or near-native answer |
|---|---|
| PrestaShop (French, large in France) | Partnership with Pennylane, a registered PA |
| WooCommerce | B2Brouter (itself a PA) plugin from €15/month for 50 transactions. BuildsByLuke (with a B2C e-reporting extract), GoFactoX, OuiFacture. |
| Stripe | "Doesn't generate or transmit legally compliant e-invoice files on its own." Preferred partner Billit, itself a French PA. |
Enterprise incumbents
Avalara, Sovos, Pagero (Thomson Reuters), EDICOM, Esker. They sell to large firms and ERPs, not €30/month Shopify merchants. They matter only if one of them builds a Shopify app, which is possible but hasn't been seen.
Wholesale suppliers (your partner, not your rival)
B2Brouter, Iopole, Seqino, FactPulse, Docaposte offer white-label or grey-label PA APIs to software vendors. Storecove and Invopop do too, but at price points built for larger firms (Invopop: €500/month Pro plus €300/month per government app; Storecove on custom quotes).
2.3 Vitamin or painkiller?
A painkiller with a deadline, for the right merchant. A vitamin for the rest.
- Painkiller: "From September 2027 my B2B invoices must go through a PA, my B2C sales must be reported three times a month, and my Shopify data has the wrong numbering and the wrong shipping VAT. My accountant says fix it." That's a legal duty with fines behind it, repeated every 10 days.
- Vitamin: a micro-entrepreneur in VAT franchise with 30 orders a month. A free PA plus a CSV export every 2 months is good enough.
- Test: if the app disappeared, would the merchant be out of compliance next week? For the target merchant, yes. That's what keeps churn tied to store closures, not to boredom.
- Penalties (not verified in this run): reported as €15 per invoice not issued electronically and €250 per missing e-report, each capped at €15,000 a year. Confirm before quoting publicly.
2.4 Market size: venture-scale, lifestyle, or a feature?
Bottom-up (rough, unverified inputs flagged):
- 158,200 active French merchant websites (FEVAD, Q4 2025). 69% sell under €100k a year, and ~1% sell over €10M.
- Shopify's share of French stores is not verified. Assume 15–25%, so ~25–40k French Shopify stores.
- Stores selling €100k+ a year: ~31% of those, so ~8–12k. That's the paying core.
- At
€400 a year each, the core SAM is **€3–5M a year**. The micro tail adds a little at low prices. - Capturing 5% of the core is ~500 merchants ≈ $18k MRR. That's why $20k sits near the ceiling of this wedge.
Answer:
- The generic "compliance connector" is a feature. Every PA, accounting tool and invoice app is adding connectors, often for free, to win merchants before the deadline.
- The French Shopify wedge is a lifestyle business of $3–10k MRR, with an exit option to a PA or an invoicing app that wants the installs.
- Venture scale would need many countries and platforms at once (the Avalara/Sovos game). That's not available to a small team.
