3. Feature-by-Feature Scrutiny (the Idea's Stated Features)
The idea listed four capabilities (booking, staff scheduling, client management, payments) plus an implied positioning (one narrow trade that books recurring appointments). Each is classified for driving schools, the trade chosen in 02.
Categories:
- Table stakes (TS): customers expect it. It earns nothing, but its absence costs you.
- Differentiator (D): a real reason to choose you over the alternatives.
- Distraction (X): built but unlikely to move revenue or retention.
- Liability (L): creates support, compliance, legal or trust risk.
3.1 Classification table
| # | Stated feature | Category | Reasoning |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Booking (clients book appointments online) | TS | Every generic scheduler does this for free or $10–40 a month. It's only a D if booking obeys the school's rules: only offer drives the student is eligible for (classroom hours done, permit held), limit drives per day, and match to pickup area. Without the rules it's Calendly. |
| 2 | Staff scheduling | TS → D | Generic staff rotas are table stakes. Matching instructor, car and pickup area to each student's remaining hours is the differentiator. The car is a scheduled resource, and a missed car service cancels a day. Drive Scout does vehicle maintenance, but costs $250/month minimum. |
| 3 | Client management | TS → D | A client list is table stakes. The per-student state-hour record (classroom hours, each drive with instructor, time and skills, signatures, what's left, certificate status) is the core of the product. It's what the state inspects and what parents chase. |
| 4 | Payments | TS → D | Card payments are table stakes. Packages, deposits, instalments, prepaid hour bundles and automatic no-show fees are a differentiator. They're the easiest money outcome to show. Holding funds yourself would be a L. Use Stripe Connect. |
| 5 | "One narrow trade that books recurring appointments" as positioning, with the trade left open | L | It leads straight to a generic scheduler. Calday shows that ceiling at $5.7k MRR. Pick the trade in the product name, the site and the pitch. |
| 6 | Implied: reminders and notifications | TS | Expected. SMS reminders cut no-shows. Budget for US business texting registration (10DLC) and message costs. |
| 7 | Implied: templates for several trades | X | Every extra trade adds its own rules and support. The idea says one narrow trade. Hold it to that. |
3.2 Scoreboard
| Category | Count | Features |
|---|---|---|
| Table stakes | 3 | Plain booking, reminders, plain client list |
| Differentiator | 4 | State-hour record, instructor-car-pickup scheduling, package payments with no-show fees, rule-aware parent booking |
| Distraction | 1 | Multi-trade templates |
| Liability | 2 | "Any trade" positioning, holding funds |
The stated features are all table stakes as written. Each becomes a differentiator only once it carries driving-school rules. That's the whole argument for choosing one trade.
3.3 Feature bloat and "building to avoid selling": explicit call-outs
- A classroom LMS or video curriculum. It looks like the obvious next step, and Zutobi already has 100+ state videos. Online classroom courses also need state approval in many states. It's months of work that teaches you nothing about whether schools will pay.
- Native iOS and Android apps. Instructors need a phone web app that works offline. Two app stores are a way to stay busy.
- Route optimisation with maps. A nice demo. A simple "pickup area" field and a day view cover 90% of the need until 30 schools ask for more.
- A marketplace that sends students to schools. It turns you into a lead-gen business competing with Zutobi's consumer app and with Coastline. Separate business.
- Multiple states at launch. Each one is a rules pack you must keep current forever.
3.4 What a disciplined v1 looks like
Keep: student hour record, rule-aware lesson booking (parent self-booking plus office booking), instructor and car calendar, package checkout with deposits and no-show fees, instructor PWA with drive log and signatures, SMS and email reminders, import wizard, security basics. Ohio only. Defer: certificate-ready exports per state, instructor pay reports, waitlists, QuickBooks sync, vehicle maintenance, the payment platform fee. Cut: curriculum, LMS, native apps, marketplace, multi-trade templates, route optimisation.
