1. Verdict

Why a ladder instead of one target

This idea is assessed at six MRR levels, not one fixed target. Outcomes for one-trade scheduling software are skewed. Most products stall at a handful of customers. Some reach a steady monthly figure. A few, like ZenMaid, compound for a decade. One "$20k MRR" number hides the most useful information: how likely each level is, and what each level costs in hours.

The anchor: there is no verified base rate

No verified base rate exists for bootstrapped B2B micro-SaaS. Nobody publishes "the share of new B2B micro-SaaS products that reach $X MRR within 24 months". The nearest proxies were verified for TradeLedger on the same day (../../tradeledger/research/10-verified-research.md):

SourceWhat it measuresFigureWhy it doesn't fit
RevenueCat, State of Subscription Apps 2026Share of new mobile apps reaching $X/month within 2 yearsBusiness category: 14.7% reach $1k, 1.6% reach $10kApp-store products, not B2B software sold to schools
ChartMogul, 2025 SaaS Growth ReportShare reaching $1M ARR from first revenue13.4% within 3 yearsThe clock starts later and the bar is far higher
MicroConf, State of Independent SaaSSurvey of existing founders—Survivorship-biased

The odds below are judgment estimates, anchored loosely to these proxies and to the catalog's trade-software stories:

  • ZenMaid (cleaning): $200k MRR by May 2024, 11 years after starting, and once lost 40% of revenue in 6 months. About 7 years to reach ~$63k MRR.
  • DanubeNet / DrivingSchoolSoftware.com: $330k–550k a year with 3–5 staff (Latka estimate, contradictory). A small team can live off this trade.
  • Calday (generic scheduler): $5.7k MRR at 2 years. The "any trade" ceiling.

Three things push the odds up compared with a generic scheduler:

  • Few customers are needed. At ~$150 a month, $10k MRR is ~67 schools.
  • The records are required by the state, and a school's student hour history is painful to move twice.
  • Buyers are listed publicly (Ohio's DETS school search, other state lists, the DSAA's ~6,000 professional schools), and the main incumbent has a breach and a class action giving its customers a reason to leave.

Three things push them down:

  • Zutobi Instructor is already selling the modern replacement, with a consumer app that sends it students.
  • Every state's rules differ, so growth beyond one state costs product work, not just sales.
  • Driving schools are small, owner-run and price-sensitive. They're instructors themselves and busy in the summer peak.

The four alternative-trade columns assume full-time work and access to the trade, so they're comparable with the right-hand column.

The recommended version is set out in WHAT-TO-DO-AND-AVOID.md and assumes all 4 founder-only conditions:

  • driving-school access;
  • 5 schools paying before building;
  • security competence from day one;
  • hours per week stated honestly, with at least 6 in US business hours.

If driving-school access is missing, multiply the recommended odds by ~0.6. If any other condition is missing, multiply by ~0.7.

Notes on the alternatives:

  • Swim schools have the best recurring pattern (weekly term lessons, levels, makeups), but Jackrabbit ($49–245/mo) and iClassPro ($139–299/mo) already handle makeups and parent self-booking.
  • Tutoring centres are proven (TutorCruncher ~$3.1M), but that is exactly the problem: TutorCruncher, Teachworks ($16.49+) and TutorBird ($16.95) own it, and prices are low.
  • Dog groomers book often, but MoeGo has raised $30.5M, and DaySmart and Gingr sit alongside it.
  • Music schools are priced at $16.95/month by My Music Staff. At that price, $10k MRR needs ~600 schools.

How to read the ladder

  • $1k–3k (7–20 schools) is a realistic outcome for a founder who can get owners on the phone. It can be sold from Ohio's public list.
  • $5k–10k (34–67 schools) needs a second state and a repeatable channel: search pages, state lists and referrals that bring schools without a founder call each time.
  • $20k (~134 schools) is a stretch in 24 months, even full-time. It needs 3–4 states and a real share of the incumbent's switchers.
  • The two columns split most between $5k and $20k. Each school costs about 3–5 founder hours to sign and migrate until onboarding is automated.

Portfolio definitions (for comparison with other ideas)

TierDefinitionRecommended, ~15 hrs/weekRecommended, full-timeAs described
Tier A (venture)$1M ARR within 36 months, ≥70% gross margin, ≥50% month-12 logo retention<1%~1%<0.5%
Tier B (profitable business)$20k+ MRR within 24 months, profitable, ≥80% gross margin, ≥70% month-3 retention~3%~9%<1%
  • Tier A needs ~555 schools at $150, about 9% of all US professional schools, in 36 months. Not the goal.
  • Tier B sits slightly below the $20k rung. Margin (~88%) is not the problem. Being profitable after part-time onboarding help and multi-state rule work is.

How this compares with the other ideas in this portfolio:

  • Just below TradeLedger at every level. Same shape (few customers, required records, sales-limited), but with a live competitor (Zutobi) taking the switchers.
  • Higher than BhashaCity and AstroCompanion at every level. It needs 30–60x fewer customers for the same MRR.
  • Its distinctive feature is timing. The incumbent's breach (2025–26) and new state rules (Ohio 2025, Colorado and Washington 2027) create a buying window that won't stay open forever.

Fundable in current form?

No, and it doesn't need to be. Driving-school software has a good-business ceiling, not a venture one. See 06-fundability.md.

One-paragraph verdict

The catalog's thesis is right: software for one trade that books recurring work can be a durable small business, and a scheduler for everyone can't. But the idea as written names no trade, and "any trade" is Calday's ceiling. Of the five candidates, driving schools are the only one where the state requires the records, the service is worth $400–800 per student, the buyers are listed publicly, and the leading incumbent is dated and was breached. Build the student hour record, a lesson scheduler that knows instructors, cars and pickup areas, package payments with no-show fees, and do the switch for every school. Start in Ohio and add states one at a time. On those terms, $1k–5k MRR is a reasonable expectation, $10k needs a second state and channels that work without you, and $20k in 24 months is a stretch that needs full-time hours.
