One-Page Brief

Verdict

No as described. Go as scheduling and student-hour records for US teen driver-ed schools, starting in Ohio.

As written, "scheduling and operations for one narrow trade" names no trade. Without one, it becomes a generic booking tool, and generic booking tools are free or cheap everywhere. Calday, a scheduler for 10+ industries, was at $5.7k MRR after two years. Judgment estimate for the as-described version: ~2% to reach $10k MRR by month 24.

Cut to independent teen driver-ed schools with 2–15 instructors, in one state, the odds of $10k MRR by month 24 are ~11% at ~15 hrs/week and ~23% full-time, with the founder conditions in WHAT-TO-DO-AND-AVOID.md met. Tier B ($20k+ MRR, profitable): ~3% / ~9%. It's not fundable, and it doesn't need to be.

The five things that matter

  1. The trade choice is the whole decision. Driving schools scored 24/30. Swim schools, tutoring, dog grooming and music schools scored 12–16, because each already has a strong, cheap incumbent (Jackrabbit and iClassPro, TutorCruncher and Teachworks, MoeGo with $30.5M raised, My Music Staff at $16.95). See 02.
  2. Driving schools have required records. Ohio requires 24 classroom hours and 8 hours behind the wheel for everyone under 21 (since Sept 2025), and the school's certificate is needed at the road test. Colorado and Washington add new requirements from Jan 2027. Required records make software sticky.
  3. The main incumbent is weak right now. DanubeNet (Driving School Software) was breached in 2025, exposing names and permit numbers, and faces a class action filed Jan 2026. Its interface is dated and desktop-first. Many schools have a reason to switch in 2026–27.
  4. But the "modern replacement" slot is being filled. Zutobi Instructor starts at $99/month, bundles 100+ state classroom videos, and claims 100+ schools in 25 states. You cannot win on modern UI. You win on the student hour record, the lesson scheduler, doing the switch for the school, and security.
  5. The limit is sales hours, not code. At ~$150 a month per school, $10k MRR is ~67 schools. Each needs a call and a records migration. At ~15 hrs/week that caps new schools at about 3–5 a month in year 1.

Feature sort (headline)

  • Table stakes: online booking, reminders, a client list, card payments.
  • Differentiators: the per-student state-hour record, a scheduler that matches instructor, car, pickup area and remaining hours, package payments with no-show fees, and a done-for-you switch from the incumbent.
  • Distractions: multi-trade templates, a curriculum or online classroom, native apps, marketing automation.
  • Liabilities: "compliant" promises, stored permit numbers and ID scans, holding parents' money, and the "any trade" positioning.

Most likely cause of death

Not enough schools, fast enough. The founder runs out of hours for calls and migrations, one state proves too small, and Zutobi signs the switchers first. Early warning: fewer than 3 new schools a month by month 6, or more than 30% of lost deals going to Zutobi.

Next 90 days

Do: call 40 Ohio school owners, run a paid hands-on service for 5, then ship the thin v1 (hour record, lesson booking, packages, instructor app) by week 10. Kill criterion: fewer than 5 schools paying by day 90 (3 at ~15 hrs/week). Stop: calling it a scheduler for any trade. It's software for driving schools.
