3. Feature-by-Feature Scrutiny (The Catalogued Features)
The idea came from catalog row C2 as a one-line concept, not a feature list. The features below are the ones that line implies, plus its pricing and positioning.
Categories:
- Table stakes (TS): customers expect it. It earns nothing, but its absence costs you.
- Differentiator (D): a real reason to choose you over the alternatives.
- Distraction (X): built but unlikely to move revenue or retention.
- Liability (L): creates support, trust, legal or margin risk.
Some features sit in two buckets. The primary bucket comes first.
3.1 Classification table
| # | Catalogued feature | Category | Reasoning |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Uptime monitoring (HTTP checks, alerts) | TS | Sold by 35+ tools. UptimeRobot: 50 monitors for $9/month. Better Stack: 10 free. ManageWP: $1/site. WP Umbrella includes it in €1.99/site. Build it in days on existing libraries, and never charge for it on its own. |
| 2 | SSL certificate expiry monitoring | TS | Every tool above includes it. Red Sift monitors 250 certificates free. The shorter lifetimes (200 days from 15 Mar 2026, 100 days from 15 Mar 2027, 47 days from 15 Mar 2029) and Let's Encrypt ending expiry emails (4 June 2025) make it more necessary, but not more valuable: it stays a checkbox. |
| 3 | Domain expiry monitoring | TS | Included by UptimeRobot (even free), Oh Dear and WP Umbrella. A real agency pain (client-owned registrar accounts lapse), but already covered. |
| 4 | Hosted status page | X for agencies / TS for SaaS teams | A local law firm or clinic has no users waiting on a status page. Status pages are an engineering-team product (Better Stack, Hyperping, Instatus). White-label pages are already sold: UptimeRobot Team $35, Better Stack $208–250. |
| 5 | "For agencies that manage many client sites" (positioning) | L as stated | It's Oh Dear's positioning, with branded reports and a reseller programme, and WP Umbrella's for WordPress. Saying it makes you a late copy. It becomes useful only with a job they don't do (form delivery). |
| 6 | Multi-site dashboard with client grouping | TS | Oh Dear, WP Umbrella and ManageWP all have it. Required, not a reason to buy. |
| 7 | $12–15/month entry price | L | At that price you need ~670 customers for $10k MRR. Buyers compare you with UptimeRobot at $9. It also sets a low anchor you can't raise later. |
| 8 | "Uptime + SSL + domain + status page" as one bundle | TS | Every competitor already bundles these four. The bundle is the category default, not a differentiator. |
3.2 Scoreboard
| Category | Count | Features |
|---|---|---|
| Table stakes | 5 | Uptime, SSL expiry, domain expiry, multi-site dashboard, the four-in-one bundle |
| Differentiator | 0 | None of the catalogued features is a reason to choose you |
| Distraction | 1 | Status pages for agency clients |
| Liability | 2 | "For agencies" as the sole positioning, the $12–15 entry price |
0% of what was described is a reason to buy. This is the core of the "No as described".
3.3 Where the differentiator is (not in the catalogued list)
The only reason to choose a new tool found in the research:
| Candidate | Category | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Inbox-verified daily test submission of contact and quote forms | D | Oh Dear's check list has no form or email-delivery test. WP Umbrella and ManageWP check that the page is up, not that the lead arrives. It targets a failure with a dollar value. |
| Passive "silence" alert for forms you can't test directly | D (weak) | Useful for Webflow, HubSpot and Typeform forms. FormPulse already does it, so it's a feature, not a moat. |
| White-label monthly "leads delivered" report | D | The agency's proof that the care plan is working, in quiet months too. It carries retention. |
Detail and priorities in 04.
3.4 "Building to avoid selling": explicit call-outs
- A custom uptime engine with 15-second checks from 10 regions. Satisfying to build, and worth nothing: the buyer already has a monitor.
- A beautiful status page builder. It demos well, and no local-business client will ever look at it.
- Full synthetic journeys (checkout, login). Brittle, maintenance-heavy, and Checkly's and Hyperping's territory.
- Lighthouse scores, broken links, accessibility scans. Oh Dear has them, and they don't answer "did the lead arrive?"
3.5 What a disciplined v1 looks like
Keep: daily inbox-verified form tests (WordPress companion plugin for 4 form plugins), passive silence alerts, a white-label monthly report, a multi-client dashboard, plus uptime, SSL, domain and MX/DNS checks as free basics. Web app only. Defer: HubSpot and Pipedrive arrival checks, SMS alerts, a booking-form journey type. Cut: status pages, on-call scheduling, synthetic checkout journeys, Lighthouse and broken-link scans, the $12–15 plan.
