2. Market Reality Check
Date: 30 Sept 2026 · Back to WHAT-TO-DO-AND-AVOID.md
Ratings and prices come from Capterra, Software Advice, vendor pages and search snippets up to 30 Sept 2026 (10). Latka figures are estimates and only show rough size. Re-verify everything before using it externally.
2.1 Which sub-vertical? Five candidates scored
Each test is scored 1–5 (5 = best for a new, small entrant).
| Test | Party and tent | DME/HME | Construction tools (small yards) | Bike and e-bike | Camera and film gear |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Incumbent weakness (ratings, complaints) | 1. Goodshuffle 4.8, InflatableOffice 4.9 | 3. Brightree 2.8 (13 reviews): hidden add-on costs, dated, bugs. But NikoHealth, Curasev and Serious ERP are modern. | 2. Point of Rental 4.3 (149 reviews). Quipli 4.9. | 1. Booqable 4.8 (~1,190 reviews), Twice 4.6 | 1. HireHop 4.88, Booqable 4.8, Current RMS 4.54 |
| Room at the small end (price gap) | 1. TapGoods from $19, Booqable $29, Goodshuffle $39 | 3. Suites cost ~$300–1,500+/mo. No cheap standalone equipment log found. | 1. POR Essentials $59, Booqable $29, Quipli | 1. $29 entry (Booqable, Twice) | 1. Booqable $29, HireHop £46 |
| Compliance or money hook | 2. Inflatable rules in a few states (MD, PA) | 5. Accreditation requires serial tracking, cleaning and PM records. Cleaning is ACHC's most-cited DMEPOS deficiency. | 2. Equipment inspection records (unverified depth) | 1. None found | 1. None found |
| Buildable by one person | 5 | 2. HIPAA, BAAs, and a hard boundary with billing | 4 | 5 | 5 |
| Year-round demand | 1. Seasonal (off-season "hibernation plans" exist) | 4. Year-round. Bidding and consolidation risk. | 3. Construction cycle, winter dip | 1. Seasonal | 3. Tied to production cycles |
| Reachable buyers | 3. Facebook groups, trade shows | 3. State HME associations, AAHomecare, VGM, accreditation consultants | 3. ARA | 2. Scattered, tiny shops | 3. Film communities |
| Total /30 | 13 | 20 | 15 | 11 | 14 |
DME wins, but narrowly and conditionally. For comparison, the TradeLedger winner scored 25/30 on a similar test (../../tradeledger/analysis/02). A 20 means "possible with an insider, not attractive without one."
Also considered and dropped:
- Cash-pay mobility rental (scooters and wheelchairs for tourists and cruise passengers): Scootaround and Special Needs Group already run it at national scale across ~50 ports.
- AV and event rental: excluded (Rentman).
- Fire-extinguisher trade: excluded (in ../../tradeledger/).
2.2 Who exactly is the buyer?
| Segment | Size (unverified unless cited) | What they use now | Pain (1–10) | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Small DME/HME suppliers, 1–5 locations, that rent serialised equipment | A share of the 8,285 medical supply companies enrolled in Medicare (CMS, CY2024). Assumed 3,000–5,000 rent equipment. | A billing suite (Brightree, Bonafide, NikoHealth, DMEworks and others), often with the asset module unused. Paper or Excel cleaning logs. | 7 before a survey, 4 between surveys | The buyer. The owner pays, and the compliance lead or warehouse manager uses it. |
| Pharmacies billing DMEPOS | 42,761 of 69,602 DMEPOS providers | Pharmacy systems | 2 | Not a buyer. They sell supplies, not rental fleets. |
| Large regional suppliers and chains | Hundreds (unverified) | Full suites with asset modules | 5 | Avoid. Long procurement, and the module is already bought. |
| Accreditation consultants | Dozens to low hundreds (unverified) | Checklists and binders | 6 | The channel, and a possible white-label pivot. |
| Party, bike, camera and tool rental owners | ~9,849 US party rental firms alone (IBISWorld 2026) | Booqable, Goodshuffle, Quipli, POR and others, rated 4.3–4.9 | 3 | Well served. Not a buyer for a new tool. |
2.3 Competitors (DME)
| Competitor | Price | Who it's for | Why a small supplier would or wouldn't switch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brightree (ResMed) | Quote only. Reviewers cite "a la carte" add-ons. | The market leader, mid to large suppliers | Rated 2.8/5 (13 reviews): hidden costs, a dated system, hard rollouts. But suppliers rarely rip out billing. RentReady has to sit beside it. |
| Bonafide (WellSky) | ~$95–99 per active user, or from ~$1,500/mo (third-party) | Small to mid suppliers | It includes a delivery app with signatures and truck inventory. It's a real overlap. |
| NikoHealth | From $29/user. ~$300–1,200/mo for a small supplier (vendor FAQ) | Small to mid suppliers, cloud-native | The strongest threat. It markets serial tracking, return inspection, maintenance tied to assets, and capped-rental flags. |
| Serious ERP | Quote only | DME/HME | Field app for delivery, pickup and cleaning of reusable equipment. |
| Curasev | Quote only | DME | "Rentals and inventory" module with full lifecycle tracking. |
| WellSky CareTend Delivery Manager | Quote only | Larger suppliers | Route optimisation, proof of delivery. |
| EZRentOut (~$29.5M, Latka estimate) | Low per-month tiers | Any rental business, markets a medical-equipment angle | Generic. No accreditation evidence pack found. |
| Paper, Excel, binders | Free | Most small suppliers (unverified) | The real competitor. They work until the surveyor arrives. |
Takeaway: the DME equipment-records job isn't unserved. It's bundled. RentReady's opening is suppliers whose billing vendor's asset module is missing, costs extra, or is too clunky for drivers to use. How big that group is remains the single most important unknown (09).
2.4 Vitamin or painkiller?
A painkiller for about six weeks before each survey, and a vitamin the rest of the time.
- Painkiller: "The surveyor is here Tuesday. Show me the cleaning record for bed serial 4471 before it went to Mrs. Lopez, and your PM log for every concentrator." A failed survey means corrective action, and in the worst case risk to Medicare billing privileges.
- Vitamin: day-to-day, a paper log "works". Drivers resist extra taps.
- Test: if RentReady disappeared tomorrow, would the supplier lose money? Only if a survey or a recall arrives before they rebuild the records. That's why the product must become the daily driver and warehouse workflow, not a once-a-year binder.
2.5 Market size
Bottom-up (rough):
- Small suppliers that rent serialised equipment: 3,000–5,000 (assumption, unverified).
- Realistic spend on a log beside billing: ~$1,800 a year (~$150 a month).
- SAM ≈ $5–9M a year. Winning 3–5% of that is $150k–450k ARR.
Answer: a small lifestyle business at best. It isn't a venture market, and it's smaller than TradeLedger's. The wider rental-software market (Point of Rental at ~$76.5M) is real, but that money sits with general-rental suppliers you can't displace.
