Verdict
No as described. Conditional Go only as a survey-ready rental-fleet log for small US DME suppliers, and only with a DME insider. Otherwise No.
Rental-management software for "one narrow sub-vertical" has a ~1% chance of reaching $10k MRR by month 24 if you build it head-on. Four of the five candidate sub-verticals are already well served by cheap, highly rated tools. The fifth, durable medical equipment (DME), has a poorly rated leader (Brightree, 2.8/5 on Capterra from 13 reviews), but modern challengers are already filling that gap. The only opening left is narrow: the equipment records that accreditation surveyors check, sold beside the billing system rather than inside it. With a DME insider and the conditions met, that wedge reaches $10k MRR at ~4% (~15 hrs/week) or ~9% (full-time). It isn't fundable, and it's weaker than TradeLedger.
The five things that matter
- The catalog was right to call this weak. Point of Rental makes ~$76.5M ARR (Latka estimate, 2024), with about 296 staff. That proves rental software pays. It doesn't prove there's room for a new entrant. The category is dense at the small end too: Booqable (4.8 from ~1,190 reviews, from $29), Quipli (4.9, $3.5M seed), Point of Rental Essentials ($59), Goodshuffle (4.8), InflatableOffice (4.9), HireHop (4.88), Twice (4.6).
- Four sub-verticals are closed. Party and tent, bike and e-bike, camera and film gear, and construction tools for small yards all have incumbents rated 4.3–4.9 that start at $19–59 a month. There's no underserved buyer to win.
- DME is the only one with a real compliance hook. Medicare suppliers must be accredited. The DMEPOS quality standards require serial-number tracking, documented cleaning before re-issue, and logged preventive maintenance. ACHC named equipment cleaning and storage (standard DRX7-12D) its most-cited DMEPOS deficiency in 2021–22.
- But the DME job is bundled with billing. Brightree (ResMed), Bonafide (WellSky), NikoHealth, Serious ERP and Curasev all sell asset tracking, delivery apps and cleaning logs inside their suites. NikoHealth costs about $300–1,200 a month for a small supplier and already flags capped rentals at months 10 and 13. RentReady has to win the suppliers whose module is missing, unused or hated. How many of those exist is unverified.
- The buyer pool is small and shrinking. CMS counts 8,285 medical supply companies among 69,602 DMEPOS providers (CY2024). Only some rent serialised equipment. Medicare competitive bidding restarts by 1 Jan 2028, which pushes small suppliers to sell or close.
Feature sort (headline)
- Table stakes: inventory and availability, bookings and orders, delivery and pickup scheduling.
- Differentiators (DME only): the clean/dirty/repair/quarantine state machine per serial number, preventive maintenance schedules, recall matching, and a one-click survey evidence export.
- Distractions: online storefronts and customer booking pages, damage deposits, dynamic pricing, route optimisation.
- Liabilities: billing and capped-rental logic, anything called "compliance" or "guaranteed survey pass", and storing more patient data than needed.
Most likely cause of death
"We already have that in Brightree." Suppliers say the module exists, even if nobody uses it, and the sale stalls. Early warning: fewer than 5 of your first 20 calls end with a paid setup.
Next 90 days
Do: confirm you have a DME insider. Get 5 suppliers paying ≥$99/month for a hands-on fleet log and survey binder by day 30. If you can't, stop. Stop: thinking about party, bike, camera or tool rental. Those markets are closed.
