3. Feature-by-Feature Scrutiny (The Described Features)
Date: 30 Sept 2026
Categories:
- Table stakes (TS): customers expect it. It earns nothing, but its absence costs you.
- Differentiator (D): a real reason to choose you over the alternatives.
- Distraction (X): built but unlikely to move revenue or retention.
- Liability (L): creates support, compliance, legal or trust risk.
Some features sit in two buckets. The primary bucket comes first.
3.1 Classification table
| # | Described feature | Category | Reasoning |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Reservations (booking calendar, check-in and check-out, capacity) | TS | Every competitor has it, from PetPocketbook at $25 to Gingr at $209. For a home boarder it must respect the licensed maximum number of dogs, which is a small differentiating twist. Build it simple, and build it second. |
| 2 | Kennel occupancy (run map, room assignment) | X for the wedge / TS for kennels | A home boarder has one house and a licence limit, not a run map. Occupancy matters for 20–60-run kennels, which already use Revelation Pets or Gingr. Replace it with a capacity counter against the licence limit. |
| 3 | Vaccine-record checks | D (as a gate) / TS (as a field) | Everyone stores a vaccine date. Few block the booking until parvovirus, distemper, hepatitis and leptospirosis are current and the primary course finished ≥2 weeks before arrival, which is the exact licence rule. KennelBooker markets checks at booking and check-in, so this is a differentiator only if it's stricter and clearer. L if AI reads the card and declares it valid without the boarder confirming. |
| 4 | Incident logs | D (inside the daily log and inspection pack) | Alone, an incident log is a form. Tied to the daily welfare log, time-stamped, locked after the day and exported into the inspection pack, it answers the risk-score item on records that "appear to be being manufactured". |
| 5 | Payments | TS now, D later | Boarders expect deposits and invoices. Payment volume is where Gingr and PetExec earn their margin, so it matters to your revenue too. L if you hold funds yourself. Use Stripe Connect with a small opt-in platform fee from month 9. |
| 6 | "Operations software for boarding and daycare" (the positioning) | L | It places you beside Gingr, Revelation Pets and KennelBooker with nothing new to say. Replace it with "the licence record book: pass your inspection in ten minutes". |
3.2 Scoreboard
| Category | Count | Features |
|---|---|---|
| Table stakes | 2 | Reservations, payments (for now) |
| Differentiator | 2 | Vaccine gate, time-stamped incident and daily logs |
| Distraction | 1 | Kennel occupancy map |
| Liability | 1 | Suite positioning (plus AI vaccine validation and holding funds, if done wrongly) |
About a third of what was described is a reason to buy. The strongest reason, the inspection pack, wasn't on the list at all. See 04.
3.3 Feature bloat and "building to avoid selling"
- The run map. It demos well and teaches you nothing about a home boarder with three dogs.
- Full payments before the record book works. Payments are the profit engine at scale, but a record book that nobody logs in daily has no volume to earn on.
- Customer app, report cards and marketing emails before inspection pack. Nice for owners, but the boarder pays for the licence problem.
- Grooming, training and retail modules. They're in every competitor because their buyers run multi-service facilities. Yours doesn't.
3.4 What a disciplined v1 looks like
- Keep: licence-mapped register, vaccine gate, time-stamped daily log (feed, toileting, exercise, behaviour, medication, incidents), one-click inspection pack, licence and renewal details (with licence number shown on the booking page, as condition 1.2 requires), 3-year retention with automatic backups.
- Next (v1.1): simple bookings against the licence limit, owner consent forms signed online, staff training records, emergency plan and key-holder page.
- Later: Stripe Connect deposits, photo updates to owners, import from KennelBooker and Revelation exports.
- Cut: run maps, grooming, retail POS, marketing campaigns, native apps, anything US.
