Verdict
No as described. Go small, as the licence record book for licensed dog home boarders and small day cares in England, with a day-45 kill test.
As described, "operations software for pet boarding and daycare businesses" (reservations, occupancy, vaccine checks, incident logs, payments) is a me-too suite in a market that PE-backed Togetherwork has already rolled up: Gingr, Revelation Pets and PetExec, with 7,000+ customers (research/10). Odds of $10k MRR by month 24: ~2%.
Narrowed to English licence holders and sold as the record book the inspector checks, the odds at the recommended plan (~15 hrs/week / full-time, conditions met) are $1k 45% / 60% · $5k 15% / 27% · $10k 6% / 13% · $20k 2% / 5%. Tier B: ~1.5% / ~4%. Judgment estimates.
The five things that matter
- The rules are real, national and current. England's licence conditions require a 12-field register, vaccination checks for four named diseases, daily welfare logs, and records kept 3 years with electronic backups. The guidance was last updated 1 June 2026. That's a fixed, checkable spec to build to.
- Records move money. The star rating sets the licence length (5 stars → 3 years, 1–2 stars → 1 year), licences cost £325–357 in Liverpool and up to ~£1,165 elsewhere (unverified), and the risk score marks down records that "appear to be being manufactured". Time-stamped logs answer that directly.
- But the wedge isn't empty. KennelBooker already markets UK licence compliance from ~$50/mo. Animal Database UK, apparently registered in 2026, sells an AAL "evidence bundle". Revelation Pets (Togetherwork) sells in GBP at £50–62. You win only on price and depth for one-person home boarders. That's why a day-45 kill test sits in the plan.
- The ticket is small. Blended
£29 ($40) a month means 250 accounts for $10k and ~500 for $20k, in a market of perhaps 8,000–15,000 licence holders (unverified). Everything must be self-serve. $20k in 24 months is out of reach for this wedge. - The PetExec migration wedge is late. The 1% gateway fee started 1 Sept 2025. A year later, Franpos and Kennel Connection run switcher pages, PetExec redirects new sales to Gingr, and any facility that moves needs full-suite parity on day one.
Feature sort (headline)
- Table stakes: booking calendar, capacity limits, owner and dog profiles, reminders, invoices.
- Differentiators: a register mapped field-by-field to the licence, a vaccine gate at booking, time-stamped daily logs that lock after the day, a one-click inspection pack, a licence-renewal countdown.
- Distractions: kennel maps and run occupancy for big facilities, grooming, retail POS, marketing campaigns, native apps at launch.
- Liabilities: "guaranteed compliant / 5 stars" claims, holding client funds, vet or medication advice, AI that declares a vaccine card valid.
Most likely cause of death
Too many small customers, too slowly. At ~£29 a month, the business needs hundreds of one-person boarders, many of whom close within a few years. If acquisition doesn't run without the founder by month 9, it stalls at $2–4k MRR. Early warning: fewer than 8 new accounts a month by month 6.
Next 90 days
Do: get 10 licence holders paying ≥£15 for a hands-on records setup, run the day-45 kill test against KennelBooker and Revelation users, then ship register + vaccine gate + daily log + inspection pack. 30 accounts by day 90 (full-time) or 15 (~15 hrs/week). Stop: anything aimed at US facilities, PetExec switchers or 50-run kennels.
