2. Market Reality Check

Date: 30 Sept 2026

Competitor prices come from public pages read on 30 Sept 2026. Several vendors don't publish prices. Latka figures are rough estimates (the catalog warns that Latka is unreliable). Re-verify before using any of this externally. Sources are in research/10.

2.1 Who exactly is the buyer?

"Churches and faith organisations" is not a buyer. Split it by who already has a Gift Aid route and who can pay:

SegmentRough sizeGift Aid route todayWillingness to payPain score (1–10)Verdict
US churches (church management + giving)Hundreds of thousands (not verified)No Gift Aid in the US$50–300/mo, often less5Avoid. Planning Center, Pushpay, Tithe.ly and Breeze own it.
Church of England parishes~£90M a year of Gift Aid across all parishesParish Giving Scheme (free), 8 diocesan schemes, or direct to HMRCLow. The free scheme exists.3–4Avoid. You'd compete with the church's own free service.
Methodist churchesNot verifiedMethodist Gift Aid Bureau (£2.10 a line, 15% under £12) or directAlready paying the bureau3Avoid as churches. Possible later as a software buyer (the bureau itself).
Small single churches with softwareChurchSuite alone has 3,000+ customersChurchSuite, AltarDesk, Tithe.ly UK£0–35/mo4Avoid. Already served, cheaply.
Independent, Pentecostal, African- and Caribbean-majority churches in a network~4,200 Pentecostal + ~3,700 independent congregations (2020, secondary, may overlap)Each claims direct, uses a church app, or doesn't claim (unverified)A share of recovered money, not a subscription (judgment)6–7 where claims are behind or giving is highBest buyer, reached through the network.
Mosques, gurdwaras, temples~1,800+ mosques (not verified)MasjidManager, GiftAidManager, MosquePay, GoodtoGive"0% fees" and "free to start" offers5–6Possible year-2 segment, with its own network.
Small secular charities~170,000 registered; 67,650 claim Gift AidHMRC free service, CRMs (Beacon, Donorfy), Swiftaid£0–40/mo4Avoid. No channel, many tools.

Overall pain score for the idea as described: 4/10. Church admin is a chore, and it's already well served. For a church in an independent network that is behind on claims or has many tithers: 6–7/10, because the money left on the table can be thousands of pounds a year.

2.2 Competitors and substitutes

The free options (your biggest threat)

OptionWhat it coversWhy a church would or wouldn't switch to you
HMRC Charities Online (free online form and spreadsheet upload, up to 1,000 donations per spreadsheet). Streamlined in September 2026 with simpler, single-purpose screens.Filing the claimWon't switch if the treasurer is organised and the church is small. Will switch if nobody wants the job, claims are years behind, or records are a mess.

Methodist Gift Aid BureauCentral claims for Methodist churches, for a per-line feeSame. It's their church's service.
Swiftaid (free up to £6,000 of Gift Aid a year via connected platforms; 5% claim submission; 10% Gift Aid Finder, £100 minimum)Gift Aid on platform donations, claim filing, backlog searchDirect competitor on price model. You win only with a network channel and church-specific intake (envelopes, plate cash, standing orders).

2.3 Vitamin or painkiller?

Mostly a vitamin, with a painkiller in two situations.

  • Vitamin: an organised church that claims every quarter. It saves an hour or two. HMRC's free service is fine.
  • Painkiller 1: a church that is years behind or has never claimed. Donations older than 4 years are lost for good, so every month of delay costs real money. A church with £100k of declared giving loses £25k of Gift Aid for each year that falls out of the window.
  • Painkiller 2: a church whose Gift Aid secretary just left. The job is specialist, volunteer-run, and hard to hand over.
  • Test: if your service disappeared, what would the church lose? For a regular filer: an hour. For a church that was behind: thousands of pounds a year. Sell to the second group.

2.4 Market size: venture-scale, lifestyle, or a feature?

Top-down:

  • UK charities received £1.88bn of Gift Aid in the year to April 2026, across 67,650 charities (HMRC statistics, via Civil Society). GASDS added about £40M in 2024-25.
  • Church of England parishes alone receive ~£90M a year.
  • A 5% fee on all church Gift Aid outside the Church of England and Methodist schemes is perhaps £5–15M a year (judgment; the base isn't published).

Bottom-up (the recommended wedge):

  • ~8,000 independent and Pentecostal congregations (secondary, may overlap), of which perhaps a third belong to networks you could reach. Not verified.
  • At £350 a year per church, 1,000 churches is **£350k a year ($470k ARR)**. That is the realistic ceiling of the bureau without a second product.

Answer, by version:

  • Church management + giving: a venture-scale market in the US, already won. Not yours.
  • Gift Aid claim app: a feature, already inside ChurchSuite, AltarDesk, Beacon and a dozen others.
  • Network Gift Aid bureau: a small lifestyle business. Its ceiling is set by how many networks will trust you.
  • Adding Pay by Bank giving with a 1% platform fee (ChurchSuite's model) raises the ceiling, but only after the bureau works.

2.5 Geography

  • UK only. Gift Aid is a UK relief. The whole wedge depends on it.
  • Scotland and Northern Ireland churches use the same HMRC scheme. Scottish charity registration (OSCR) differs from England and Wales, but Gift Aid claiming doesn't.
  • Not the US. Nothing in the wedge carries over.
