No as described, and No as a Gift Aid claim app. Go, small, only as a success-fee Gift Aid service for one church network you can already reach.

1. Verdict

Date: 30 Sept 2026

Why a ladder instead of one target

This idea is assessed at six MRR levels instead of one fixed target, the same as the rest of the portfolio. For a small faith-sector service the useful question isn't "will it hit $20k?". It's how likely each level is, and what each level costs in hours.

The anchor: what base rate?

There is no verified base rate for bootstrapped B2B micro-SaaS reaching MRR levels from launch. The catalog research found that every common indie-SaaS statistic failed verification.

  • RevenueCat 2026 is the nearest verified figure, but it covers mobile subscription apps: 17.3% reach $1k a month within 2 years and 4.6% reach $10k. Its Business category is 14.7% and 1.6%.
  • A church bureau needs far fewer customers per level, so RevenueCat probably understates the chance at $1k. It sells into a slow, relationship-driven market, so it probably overstates the chance at $20k+.

The odds below are judgment estimates, anchored to what the research found about competitors, prices and the denominational schemes. See research/10.

Step 1: which wedge? Distribution and willingness to pay decide

Accepted fee model, a channel, and no equivalent service found

Why the network bureau wins:

  1. It has a channel. The catalog's own pattern says the big boring winners grow "through a community, not ads". A church network is that community. One trusted introduction beats a year of search traffic.
  2. Its price is already accepted. Methodist churches pay their bureau per line. Charities pay Swiftaid 5–10%. A success fee means the church never pays unless HMRC pays, which suits volunteer treasurers.
  3. It avoids the price war. You're not a £9 app competing with a free one. You're "the Gift Aid office your network never had".
  4. The segment is growing. Pentecostal congregations grew from about 2,500 in 2000 to 4,200 in 2020, and there are about 3,700 independent churches (Brierley data, secondary). The Redeemed Christian Church of God alone started 865 UK churches by 2020.
  5. Tithing churches may have high Gift Aid per church. If members give 10% of income, the Gift Aid per church can far exceed the ~£7,000 assumed here. This is unverified and is the first thing to check in the 90-day plan.

The "as described" column and the other candidates' columns assume full-time work.

Recommended means the network bureau set out in WHAT-TO-DO-AND-AVOID.md, with the 3 conditions met:

  • a way into one network of 30+ independent churches;
  • a paid UK charity-tax reviewer, plus professional indemnity insurance;
  • 5 churches with a claim filed by hand by day 45.

If any one condition is missing, multiply the recommended odds by about 0.5. Without the network, the recommended wedge collapses to roughly the "Gift Aid finder" column.

These are judgment estimates, not computed statistics.

Tier B: $20k+ MRR in 24 months, profitable, ≥80% margin, ≥70% month-3 retention~1.5%~3.5%~1%

Fundable in current form?

No. It's a crowded category with a free government option and a small, slow buyer. The recommended version is a services-heavy bureau that depends on one relationship. Nobody should raise money for it, and it doesn't need any. See 06.

One-paragraph verdict

The evidence in the catalog is real: church software plus giving has produced a $87.5M acquisition and several eight-figure companies. But those companies are the reason a solo founder shouldn't build church software now. The catalog's own escape route, UK Gift Aid automation, is also taken: AltarDesk ships the exact feature set for free to small churches, ChurchSuite charges £9, and HMRC's own service is free and was simplified this month. What remains is not a software gap. It's a service and distribution gap: churches outside the Church of England and Methodist schemes have nobody to do their Gift Aid for them, and churches already accept paying a share of what comes back. If you can walk into one independent church network with a trusted introduction, a success-fee bureau can reach $3–5k MRR in two years. If you can't, don't start.
