7. What's Missing: The Gap to Paid, Renewed, Referred
7.1 To get paid
| Gap | Fix |
|---|---|
| No reason to pay you rather than Astrotalk or AstroSage | Lead with what they can't do cheaply: "We find your real birth time from your past, remember your life, and answer without a per-minute meter." |
| No pricing | India: Free (kundli, calibration quiz, basic daily card, 3 questions) · Plus ₹199/mo or ₹1,499/yr (personal daily card on WhatsApp, 40 questions a month, 2 family profiles) · question packs ₹99 for 10 · calibrated life report ₹499. USD: Plus $7.99/mo or $59/yr, report $19. |
| Pricing formats the category abuses | No weekly plans. No trial that silently converts. Explicit consent to renewal, a reminder before each renewal, and one-tap cancellation. This is both the law (7.4) and a trust signal. |
| Unclear value moment | The calibration result is the paywall moment: show the rectified chart free, and charge for the chat that uses it. |
7.2 To get renewed
| Gap | Fix |
|---|---|
| AI apps churn about 30% faster (RevenueCat 2026) | Memory, family profiles and the personal daily card give a reason to come back that isn't novelty. |
| Inconsistent answers (the top complaint in AI astrology reviews) | Store a "reading" per topic (marriage, career, health-as-wellbeing) once, and have the chat build on it. Same question, same core answer. |
| Nothing new after the first week | Transit and dasha-change alerts, favourable-window requests, and monthly "what's shifting for you" notes. |
| Credit packs are one-off purchases | Annual plans at about 37% off. Credits roll over for subscribers only. |
7.3 To get referred
| Gap | Fix |
|---|---|
| Nothing to share | Compatibility results (the partner must enter their details to see them), the "my real ascendant" card, and the daily card as a WhatsApp Status image. |
| No incentive | 10 free questions for both sides of a referral. |
| Family use is invisible | Family profiles invite the family member to claim their own chart. |
7.4 Non-product gaps
Distribution
Channels that fit:
- short daily videos in Hindi and English, generated from the day's transits;
- the compatibility and ascendant share loops;
- long-tail content pages the incumbents ignore (specific transits, dasha periods, "Saturn return at 29–30", marriage-timing questions);
- diaspora cultural and temple community groups (content, not ads);
- WhatsApp channels.
Avoid: head-term SEO for "kundli" (AstroSage and Astrotalk own it), and English-language Meta ads against the Western palm-scan apps.
Positioning
Bad: "AI astrology platform with palm reading, kundli and chat." Good (example): "Your real birth time, found from your own past. An astrologer that remembers your life and answers any time, with no per-minute meter."
Compliance and legal
| Area | Requirement | Design response |
|---|---|---|
| AI chat that remembers the user | California SB 243 (in force 1 Jan 2026) covers "companion chatbots" that sustain a relationship across interactions. It requires AI disclosure, a suicide and self-harm protocol, and extra duties for minors, with a private right of action ($1,000 per violation). New York GBL §1700 (in force Nov 2025) is similar, with AG fines of up to $15k a day. EU AI Act Article 50 chatbot disclosure has applied since 2 Aug 2026. A memory-based astrology chat plausibly falls in scope. | Disclose that it's AI at the start and in the UI. Build a crisis protocol (detect self-harm, stop the reading, show local helplines). 18+ only. Get a lawyer's view before opening US signups. |
| Palm photos | Washington MHMDA explicitly lists imagery of the "hand, palm" from which an identifier template can be extracted, with a private right of action. Texas CUBI covers hand geometry for commercial purposes. Illinois BIPA covers "hand geometry" but excludes photographs, and courts are moving towards requiring that the data can identify someone. GDPR treats it as special-category only if used for unique identification. | Extract line features on the device, or process the image and delete it at once. Never store the image or a hand template. Explicit consent screen. Consider disabling palm scan for Washington and Texas users. |
| Personal data (India) | DPDP Rules were notified Nov 2025. Consent Manager rules apply from 13 Nov 2026; the main obligations (notice, security, 72-hour breach reporting, children) from 13 May 2027. Anyone under 18 needs verifiable parental consent, and tracking or targeted ads aimed at children are banned. Penalties go up to ₹250 crore. | 18+ only. Minimal data. Encrypt birth details and chat. Set retention limits. Offer export and deletion. Build this in from v1, not in 2027. |
| Subscriptions | US: the FTC's click-to-cancel rule was vacated in 2025, but ROSCA enforcement continues (FTC v. Genesis/Nebula, June 2026). California ARL (1 Jul 2025): express consent, reminders, and cancellation through the same channel. UK DMCC Act subscription rules from January 2027: reminders, 14-day cooling-off periods, easy exit. India CCPA dark-pattern guidelines (2023) name "subscription trap", "drip pricing" and silent free-to-paid conversion. | No weekly plans. No auto-converting trials. Show the full price up front. Remind before every renewal. One-tap cancellation. Keep consent records for 3 years. |
| Advertising claims (India) | ASCI has repeatedly upheld complaints against astrology ads for "guarantees" and exaggerated claims. The Drugs and Magic Remedies Act bans ads claiming magic cures for listed diseases (the 2020 amendment appears not to have been enacted). | Never "100% accurate", "guaranteed", or cure claims. Label predictions as guidance. |
| Anti-superstition laws | The Maharashtra (2013) and Karnataka (2017) Acts exempt astrology. The risk returns only if you sell remedies claiming supernatural cures. | No remedy e-commerce. |
| App stores | Apple guideline 4.3(b) names fortune telling as a saturated category, accepted only if "meaningfully different". Rejections have explicitly cited astrology, horoscopes and palm reading as spam. Google Play: "for entertainment purposes" does not exempt an app from deceptive-behaviour rules. | Launch on the web and WhatsApp. Submit to stores only once the calibration and memory features clearly qualify as "meaningfully different". |
| Chart engine licence | Swiss Ephemeris is AGPL or a Professional licence at CHF 700, one-time. Most Vedic libraries (PyJHora, Kerykeion, libephemeris) are AGPL or depend on Swiss Ephemeris. Skyfield (MIT) with JPL DE440 data (public domain) is the permissive route. | Either buy the CHF 700 licence, or build the Vedic layer on Skyfield + JPL. Don't ship AGPL code in a closed server app. |
| Historical timezones | IANA says pre-1970 timezone data is patchy and often comes from uncited astrology books. India had +6:30 war time (1942–45), Bombay Time until 1955 and Calcutta Time until 1948. | Keep a vetted override table for India and common diaspora birth places, and show the UTC offset used so users can correct it. |
Team
Needed: one full-stack engineer comfortable with LLM tool-calling and astronomy libraries, and a practising Jyotish astrologer as a paid advisor to review the interpretation rules, the calibration questions and the tone. Content can be largely automated.
Metrics
Activation (finishes the quiz and asks a first question), calibration accuracy rating, day-7 and day-30 return, questions per payer per week, free-to-paid within 14 days, month-2 and month-3 payer retention, share-driven signups, LLM cost per payer, and refunds and chargebacks.
