6. Fundability
6.1 Would I invest?
Pre-seed: No, as described. It's an "AI astrologer" in a year when the category leader is valued at $1B, AstroSage already runs an AI astrologer on 1.5M daily users, and several funded AI-first startups (AstroSure.ai $6M, Vaya $1.5M, Melooha) are ahead. There's no data or distribution edge yet. Seed: No. There's no traction.
What would get a conversation: retention data proving that calibration and memory work. For example, month-3 payer retention of 35%+ in a category where AI apps churn fast, plus a share loop producing 30%+ of new users. Note that this business doesn't need investors to reach any level up to about $10k MRR.
6.2 What a skeptical investor says in the first five minutes
- "AstroSage already has an AI astrologer and 80 million downloads. Why you?"
- "Astrotalk could add your quiz in a sprint. What's left after they do?"
- "What's month-3 retention? AI apps churn 30% faster than others."
- "How do you acquire users when the incumbents own search for 'kundli' and outbid you on ads?"
- "Is your chart engine accurate? Which ayanamsa? Tested against what?"
- "What happens when a user in crisis asks the bot whether they'll die, or whether to stop treatment?"
- "Are you running a weekly-trial funnel? The FTC just sued the biggest one."
- "Palm photos: where are they stored, and is that biometric data?"
- "What does an LLM answer cost you, against ₹199 a month?"
- "Why this team? Does anyone here actually know Jyotish?"
6.3 Three proof points that would flip my answer
| # | Proof point | Threshold | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Calibration drives retention | Users who finish the calibration quiz retain ≥1.5x better at month 3 than those who skip it | Proves the core idea is a moat, not a gimmick. |
| 2 | Payers stay | ≥35% of monthly payers still paying at month 3, blended churn ≤8%/mo | Beats the "AI app churn" objection. |
| 3 | Cheap distribution | ≥30% of new users from shares and referrals, paid CAC payback <3 months | Answers the incumbent search and ads dominance. |
A strong fourth: USD payers ≥30% of MRR, which proves the diaspora angle and doubles the value of each user.
6.4 Bootstrap or raise?
Bootstrap. Costs are an LLM bill, a chart library licence, hosting and payment fees. There's no inventory, no human astrologers and no sales team. It is profitable from the first payer if LLM cost per user is metered. It runs asynchronously: no sales calls, no onboarding meetings, no human supply to manage.
Raise only if all three proof points hold and you decide to buy growth with paid acquisition. The $20k–50k levels in the ladder mostly require that. Keep that as a later option, not the plan.
The versions not to fund at any stage: the human-astrologer marketplace (ops-heavy, and Astrotalk owns it) and the palm-scan weekly-trial funnel (an enforcement target).
