9. Assumptions and Open Inputs

The brief gave the concept, five candidate niches and a few pieces of evidence (Smartwaiver's background, the "sounds trivial" insight, and the risk from cheap generic tools). It didn't give team, hours per week, geography, budget, pricing or any industry connections. Here's what I assumed, and how the verdict changes if each assumption is wrong.

9.1 Assumptions made

InputAssumption usedIf actually different…
NicheChosen here: US tattoo and piercing studios (02)If you have deep access to tour operators on a booking system without native waivers, the tour niche becomes competitive (higher prices, ~$89–149). If you have a compliance background in healthcare, med spas become possible, but only with a HIPAA budget.
Hours per week availableTwo columns: ~15 hrs/week and full-timeUnder 10 hrs/week: roughly halve the 15 hrs/week odds above $3k.
GeographyUS, 3 launch statesUK or a single-rule country: the rules engine loses most of its value.
PricingRecommended $19 / $39 / $79, blended ~$33At a blended $25, every customer count in the ladder rises by a third.
StageIdea. No code, no users, no revenueAny paying studios change this from opinion to evidence.
Team1 technical founder, no studio backgroundA founder who has worked in a studio, or a piercer co-founder, is the single biggest improvement to the odds.
Budget~$3–6k for year 1: legal review, insurance, hosting, a convention standWithout the legal review, don't launch the rules engine publicly.
Churn~3% a month for paying studios after month 6, helped by annual plans and stored recordsAt 5%+, $10k is marginal and $20k is out of reach.
Square usage among studios"Common" among small studios; share not verifiedIf fewer than ~20% of target studios use Square, lead with the universal link and QR, and pick the integration studios actually ask for.
Smartwaiver figures~$3.4M revenue, ~36 staff (Owler and ZoomInfo estimates)Third-party estimates, not audited. The conclusion (a small category) holds within a wide range.

9.2 Inputs that would change the verdict most (please supply)

  1. Hours per week available, and for how long.
  2. Any connection to tattoo or piercing studios: working in one, knowing an owner, a piercer in the family.
  3. Launch states, and why.
  4. Budget for the legal review, insurance and year-1 tools.
  5. Technical skills: can you build forms, PDFs, encryption and an API integration yourself?
  6. What outcome you'd be happy with at month 24. If $3–5k MRR with low operations is a good result, this idea fits. If only $20k+ counts, pick a different idea from the portfolio.

9.3 Definitions used throughout

  • Tier A: $1M ARR within 36 months, ≥70% gross margin, ≥50% month-12 logo retention.
  • Tier B: $20k+ MRR (≈ $250k ARR) within 24 months, profitable, ≥80% gross margin, ≥70% month-3 retention.
  • Studio: a tattoo or piercing business with one or more artists at one location.
  • Blended ARPU: average monthly revenue per paying account after annual discounts and plan mix (~$33 here).
  • Churn benchmark used: 2–3% a month is healthy for small-business SaaS with annual plans; 5%+ is a problem. These are working assumptions, not verified benchmarks.
