4. Expanded Feature Catalog (What Studios Ask For)
These are the features tattoo and piercing studios look for in consent software, drawn from competitor feature lists, app-store descriptions and studio guides (research/10). Being in demand doesn't mean you should build it. Most of these are already met by someone, often for free.
Legend: TS = Table stakes, D = Differentiator, X = Distraction, L = Liability. Priority: P0 = v1, P1 = next (months 4–9), P2 = later, — = don't build.
4.1 The booking and studio systems that matter
| # | System | How studios use it | Forms today | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Square Appointments | Booking and payments for many small studios (share unverified) | File attachments only, no form builder | Integrate first. Booking webhook → pre-sign link → signed PDF back on the customer record. |
| 2 | Vagaro | Booking plus marketplace | Forms add-on, $10/month | Compete on rules, or integrate later if studios ask. |
| 3 | Instagram DMs + Google Calendar | Many artists book in DMs (unverified share) | None | A shareable pre-sign link and QR code serve them without an integration. |
| 4 | Acuity / Squarespace Scheduling, Calendly | Solo artists | Basic intake questions | P2 integration if asked. |
| 5 | Porter, Tattoogenda, Tattoo Studio Pro, InkBook, TattooPro.io | Studio suites | Consent included | Not your market. Don't integrate; they're competitors. |
| 6 | GlossGenius, Fresha | Salon-style booking used by some studios and PMU artists | GlossGenius includes forms | Low priority. |
Recommendation: Square at launch, plus a universal pre-sign link and QR code for everyone else. Add a second integration only when 10 paying studios ask for the same one.
4.2 Demanded features, classified
A. Compliance (the core; lean in)
| Feature | Demand signal | Category | Priority | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| State rules engine (age, consent override, notarization, presence, ID, retention, statute link) | Competitors publish state guides as SEO content, which shows search demand | D | P0 | 10 states at launch, all 50 + DC by month 9. Every rule dated and sourced. |
| Hard block for procedures a state bans (for example under-18 tattoos in ~14 jurisdictions) | Implicit: criminal penalties | D | P0 | The form refuses to proceed, and says why, with the statute. |
| Guardian flow: minor ID, guardian ID, birth certificate or court papers, relationship check, both signatures, presence attestation | High among piercers (studios post their own "piercing minors" rules pages) | D | P0 | The single most valuable feature. |
| Notarized consent upload (Florida, Kentucky, Delaware, Kansas) | Specific states | D | P0 for those states | Upload and flag; you don't notarize. Remote online notarization is a P2 partner integration. |
| Retention by state + auto-delete with warning | Retention runs 1–7 years by state | D | P0 | Default to the stricter of state rule or 7 years unless the studio changes it. |
| Inspection export (date range, artist or client → one PDF bundle) | Inspectors can ask for records | D | P0 | "Inspection-ready" is the pitch. |
| Ink, needle and jewellery lot or batch recording per procedure | Traceability; some jurisdictions expect it (verify per state) | TS / D | P1 | Useful if a batch is recalled. |
| State-prescribed forms (some states publish their own consent form, for example Wisconsin form 3204) | State-specific | D | P1 | Reproduce the official wording where a state prescribes it. |
| "Legal advice" chatbot on rules | Tempting | L | — | Show rules and sources. Never give advice. |
B. Signing and check-in
| Feature | Category | Priority | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pre-sign link by text and email, with a 24-hour reminder | TS | P0 | The biggest time saver. |
| iPad kiosk (PWA, locked mode) + QR code at the desk | TS | P0 | Every competitor has it. |
| ID photo capture, embedded in the signed PDF | TS | P0 | Expected. Encrypt it. |
| ID auto-read (date of birth from the barcode) to flag minors | D | P1 | Catches a minor who lies about their age. |
| Returning-client re-sign (pre-filled, new signature per procedure) | TS | P0 | Artists see the same clients often. |
| Multi-language forms (Spanish first) | TS / D | P1 | Tattoo Release Forms offers 5 languages. |
| Convention (offline) mode with guest-artist details | D | P1 | Conventions are where artists meet, and a referral loop. |
| Native iOS app | X | — | A PWA covers it until $5k MRR. |
C. Records and admin
| Feature | Category | Priority | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Search by name, date of birth, date, artist, procedure | TS | P0 | Expected. |
| Per-artist accounts and guest artists | TS | P0 | Multi-artist studios need it. |
| Export all data (CSV + PDFs) at any time | TS | P0 | A trust signal, and it lowers fear of lock-in. |
| Archive plan ($5/month) for paused or closed studios | D | P0 | Records must outlive the subscription. Smartwaiver sells a $7 storage plan for the same reason. |
| Audit log (who viewed or exported which record) | TS / D | P1 | Needed for data safety and inspections. |
D. Client communication
| Feature | Category | Priority | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aftercare instructions sent after signing | TS | P1 | Cheap to add; studios like it. |
| Review request after healing | X | P2 | Wherewolf sells this to tour operators. Studios already get reviews on Instagram and Google. |
| Marketing email and SMS campaigns | X | — | A different product. Mailchimp exists. |
E. Studio business features (don't build)
| Feature | Category | Priority | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Booking, calendar, deposits | X | — | Square, Porter, Tattoogenda and Vagaro own it. |
| POS and inventory | X | — | Same. |
| Portfolio, website builder | X | — | Tattoo Studio Pro already gives these away. |
| Artist commission and payroll | X | — | Out of scope. |
F. Adjacent niches (later, only past $10k MRR)
| Niche | Category | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Permanent makeup and microblading | D (later) | Overlapping consent and state rules; some sit under the same body-art regulations. |
| Laser tattoo removal | L | Medical device rules in many states. |
| Med spas | L | See 03. |
4.3 Net effect
Of about 35 features studios look for, about 10 are real differentiators, and about 12 belong in v1. The rest is table stakes you add slowly, or other products you should leave alone.
