2. Market Reality Check

Competitor prices, user counts and policy dates come from the 30 Sept 2026 research run. Confidence levels are in research/10. Anything marked "estimate" or "unverified" needs checking before it's used externally.

2.1 Which dashboard? Six platforms scored

The idea names seven dashboards. KDP and Merch share an owner, so six were scored. Each criterion is scored 1–5 (5 is best for you).

PlatformPain in the neglected workflowNative gapTerms-of-service safety for an extensionCompetition (5 = open)Price per customerReach (can you find buyers cheaply?)Total /30
Amazon KDP (backlist pricing and promos)4. Repricing 20–200 titles × 3 formats × up to 13 marketplaces by hand, twice per promo4. Help pages show one-title-at-a-time pricing and no scheduling3. KDP terms (27 Sept 2024) have no bot clause, but Amazon can terminate "if we have concerns"4. Uploaders and analytics exist; no bulk-pricing extension found3. ~$20/mo; authors already pay $17–249/mo for reporting4. Author groups, forums, YouTube, newsletters22
Amazon Seller Central42. The SP-API powers hundreds of tools1. Agent Policy (4 Mar 2026): automation only through the SP-API; browser automation and scraping prohibited1. Helium 10, Jungle Scout and many more5316
eBay Seller Hub332. Not researched; eBay's user agreement is believed to bar robots and scrapers (unverified)2. Crosslisters (Vendoo, List Perfectly) are established (unverified)3316 (unverified)
Meesho / Flipkart seller panels4. Returns, RTO, lost-order claims, settlement matching32. Not researched2. Meesho Seller Lens, Meesho Supplier Analytics, TrackEcom already live1. Extensions sell at ₹29/month315
Amazon Merch on Demand3. Uploading hundreds of designs; weak sales view22. Upload tools pitch "safety from detection"; terminations are common for IP reasons1. 8+ live extensions, including free ones2. $9.99–14.99/mo in 20194. Merch Facebook groups14
Etsy32. Some native bulk edit; the API supports full listing edits1. API terms bar browser extensions from accessing or scraping without written permission1. Vela, Evlista, Sale Samurai; EverBee has 200k extension users2413

KDP wins with 22/30. It's the only dashboard where the gap is documented, the terms don't explicitly ban what you'd build, and no direct competitor turned up. The next best scores 16, and both of those have a terms-of-service problem.

2.2 Who exactly is the buyer?

"KDP authors" is not a buyer either. Most publish one or two books and never need bulk anything. Split by catalogue size:

SegmentRough size (loose estimate, unverified)TitlesWillingness to payPain score (1–10)Verdict
One- or two-book authorsVery large1–5~$02Avoid. Editing two books by hand takes ten minutes.
Low-content publishers (journals, puzzle books, colouring)Large50–1,000+$10–30/mo, but low royalties per title6. Huge catalogues, price-floor problems after print-cost changesSecondary. Big catalogues, thin margins, and heavily policed by Amazon. Don't build for their upload habit.
Prolific fiction authors (series, rapid release)Tens of thousands (estimate)15–100$15–30/mo if it saves hours every promo7–8. Monthly promos, series price ladders, KU vs wide decisionsBest buyer. They run a business, promote monthly, and talk to each other.
Small presses and multi-pen-name publishersThousands (estimate)50–500$50–100/mo8. Several accounts, dozens of authors, repricing is a staff taskBest per-account value. The Press plan.
Traditional or hybrid publishersSmallVariesEnterprise tools3. They use distributors and ONIX feedsOut of scope.

Overall pain score for the recommended wedge: 7/10. It's hours of clicking with a real cost of mistakes (a book left at 35% royalty, a promo price left on for weeks). It's not 9/10, because the job is episodic unless you run promos.

2.3 Competitors and substitutes

2.4 Vitamin or painkiller?

A mild painkiller, twice a year for most, monthly for promoters.

  • Painkiller moments: a royalty-band change (July 2026), a print-cost change (June 2025), a series launch that needs the whole ladder repriced, a promo across 10 titles and 6 marketplaces. Each costs hours and risks a costly mistake.
  • Vitamin the rest of the time: if you only reprice after Amazon changes the rules, you don't need a monthly subscription.
  • Test: if the extension vanished tomorrow, what would the author lose? A promoter loses their monthly promo workflow and the auto-revert. A one-time repricer loses nothing until the next change. Sell to promoters.

2.5 Market size: venture-scale, lifestyle, or a feature?

Bottom-up (every input is an estimate):

  • KDP publishers with 20+ titles who already pay for tools: ~20,000–60,000 worldwide (loose estimate; Publisher Champ's "25,000 authors" is the only nearby anchor).
  • Realistic spend on this job: ~$150–300 a year.
  • SAM ≈ $3–18M a year. Capturing 2–5% gives $60k–900k ARR, or $5k–75k MRR at the extremes. The middle of that range is a good one-person business.

Answer: a feature that Amazon could ship, sold as a lifestyle business until it does. That's not an insult. Merch Wizard was the same, and it sold. Price and run it as a sellable asset, not a company.

2.6 Geography

  • Sell worldwide in USD. KDP authors are concentrated in the US, UK, Canada, Australia and Germany. The product is language-light (a dashboard overlay), so English is enough to start.
  • KDP runs up to 13 marketplaces with separate prices and currencies (count not re-verified). Multi-marketplace pricing is part of the pain, and a feature.
  • India: there's no special angle for this wedge. Meesho and Flipkart were scored in 2.1 and lost on price per customer.
