10. Research Findings (30 Sept 2026)

These findings come from a single-pass web research run on 30 Sept 2026, covering competitors and pricing, native platform features, involuntary churn benchmarks, API access and India payment rules. Part-way through, the session's web-search budget ran out, so later items were checked by fetching the vendors' own pages directly. There was no adversarial (multi-vote) verification. Each claim is tagged:

  • High: a primary source (vendor docs, pricing page, official blog), fetched on 30 Sept 2026.
  • Medium: a vendor's claim about itself, press, or a single secondary source.
  • Low: an aggregator, search snippet, listing site or analyst estimate.

Currency conversions assume ₹88 = $1 (not verified).

R1. Churn Buster

  • High (evidence supplied, re-checked). Its site says it has worked with subscription brands since 2013, and now claims $5bn+ recurring revenue under management, 50M+ failed payments handled and 1,000+ accounts. Supported platforms include Stripe, Braintree, Recurly, Recharge, Shopify, Skio, Loop, Stay AI, Seal, Ordergroove, Smartrr, Awtomic, Checkout Champ, Rivo, Subbly and Inveterate. No Razorpay, Paddle or Lemon Squeezy. Features: adaptive retries, email, SMS, card-update page, pre-dunning for expiring cards, cancel flows. Sources: churnbuster.io, churnbuster.io/dunning.
  • Medium. "Since 2013 … recovered over $100,000,000 of failed payments" appears in Churn Buster's partner listings. Source: Stripe partner page (search snippet; the page wasn't fetched in full).
  • High. Pricing is flat by MRR tier: from $269/month for Dunning or Cancel Flows, $430/month for both, month-to-month, "designed to pay for itself at approximately a 1% recovery-rate improvement". Source: churnbuster.io.
  • Low. Older third-party listings show $99/month at $25k MRR up to $599 above $300k MRR. These look outdated. Sources: TrustRadius, SaaSworthy.
  • Medium (Latka estimate). ~$996.2K revenue in 2020, ~11 employees, $0 external funding recorded, founded 2012. Source: Latka.
  • Medium (interview; date not shown, context suggests ~2017). Matt Goldman and his wife Joelle bought Churn Buster from founder Andrew Culver, whom they met through MicroConf, and Culver kept a partial stake. Goldman says "we raised money to take over the product to buy it from Andrew", then ran for 6–9 months with "a zero bank balance" before stabilising. He describes hands-on sales at higher prices and revenue of "over a million ARR". Early mistakes: changing pricing and onboarding right after the acquisition, which caused churn. Source: Garrett Dimon interview.
    • Correction to the brief: the business was acquired with raised acquisition money, then grown without a venture round. "Bootstrapped" is accurate for its growth, not for the purchase.

R3. What the platforms do natively

  • Stripe (High).

    • Smart Retries uses AI timing. The recommended default is 8 tries within 2 weeks. Custom schedules allow up to 3 retries. Up to 3 automations are included.
    • Stripe doesn't retry on hard declines or on India-issued cards.
    • Local-method retries exist for ACH, SEPA, Bacs and BECS.
    • Sources: Stripe docs, stripe.com/billing, Billing pricing.

Billing fee (pay-as-you-go)0.7% of billing volume
Smart Retries, reminder emails, recovery automationsIncluded in the fee, no separate charge
  • Medium. Redux, using 200+ Stripe Billing accounts and $500M+ of failed volume, puts B2C recovery on Stripe's native suite at 25–35%. It relays a Recurly split of B2B 53.5% vs B2C 34.6% (secondary). Source: Redux.

  • Paddle (High).

    • Since 9 Jan 2025, every Paddle Billing account retries failed automatic payments up to 7 times over 30 days, free.
    • Paddle Retain adds optimised emails (up to 4 over ~7 days), in-app notices, SMS, tactical retries ("an additional 10–15%", company claim), cancel flows and term optimisation, "at no extra cost" on Paddle Billing.
    • Sources: changelog, dunning docs, Retain.
  • Lemon Squeezy (High).

    • 4 retries over 2 weeks, with an email on each failure. The subscription stays active while past_due, then becomes unpaid.
    • A customisable dunning sequence with a payment-update page follows. PayPal subscriptions retry every 5 days.
    • No pre-dunning for expiring cards.
    • Source: LS docs.
  • Lemon Squeezy's future (High). Stripe acquired it on 26 Jul 2024 (TechCrunch). The Jan 2026 update says the team has focused on Stripe Managed Payments, admits slower support, and promises an easy migration path for users (LS blog).

  • Razorpay (High for states, Medium for retries).

    • Subscriptions support cards (tokenised), UPI Autopay and e-mandates.
    • A failed auto-charge moves the subscription to pending, and Razorpay "continues to retry" and emails the customer with a card-update option. After all retries it moves to halted, and later invoices generate without auto-charge.
    • Razorpay markets "Smart Payment Retries" but doesn't publish the count or timing. A Razorpay blog says "automated retry logic (up to 8 attempts) can help recover 20–30% of lost revenue" (Medium, vendor blog, 5 May 2026).
    • Sources: Subscriptions docs, states, Razorpay blog.
  • Shopify subscription apps (Medium). Churn Buster integrates with 15+ Shopify-side subscription apps, and FlyCode is a named Shopify preferred partner. Shopify's own dunning documentation returned 404 and was not verified.

R4. Involuntary churn rates

  • High (Recurly network, July 2026 data). Recurly labels these "median annual churn rates". The label is odd: the same values are widely quoted elsewhere as monthly. This review therefore relies on the involuntary share (~⅓ of all churn), which holds either way. Source: Recurly.

    All industries3.602.341.2535%
    $250+ revenue per customer3.54—0.18~5%
  • High. Recurly says it helps customers recover $1.6bn a year, including $155M+ in SaaS and $100M+ in digital media.

  • Low. "Involuntary churn is 20–40% of total SaaS churn" and "B2B decline rates of 8–10%" come from aggregator articles. The Recurly shares above sit in the same range.

  • No India-specific involuntary churn or UPI Autopay failure-rate data was found.

R5. API access by platform

  • Stripe (High): the invoice.payment_failed webhook carries attempt_count, and next_payment_attempt shows the schedule. Full API. Docs.
  • Paddle (High): the update-payment-method endpoint returns the latest past_due transaction to pass to checkout. It needs transaction.write and doesn't itself collect. API reference. Whether a third party can trigger a retry: not verified.
  • Lemon Squeezy (Medium, 9 Aug 2026): subscription_payment_failed returns a subscription-invoice object. The status filter behaves unexpectedly. There's no endpoint to retry a failed charge on demand. The author promotes "Rescue", a dunning tool for Lemon Squeezy and Paddle. dev.to.
  • Razorpay (Medium): subscription states are documented. Webhook event names, payment-link creation for a halted subscription, OAuth or partner access, and whether a third party can trigger a retry were not verified. This is the week-1 spike.
  • Shopify: not verified (documentation page returned 404).

R6. Solo and indie dunning products with revenue

  • Churn Buster: ~$996K (2020, Latka estimate), ~11 staff, no venture funding recorded. Bought from its solo founder. See R1.
  • Churnkey: ~$1.7M (2025, Latka estimate), 15 staff. Funding not reported.
  • Stunning: operating since 2012, flat pricing, email, SMS and in-app. Revenue not verified. A Latka page for it wasn't found.
  • Rechurn: built by a solo founder who was "losing €400/month to failed payments on my €6k MRR SaaS". Revenue not disclosed.
  • recurring.so, "Rescue" (Lemon Squeezy and Paddle), and several others seen only as search-result titles (Churnward, RecovaMRR, RecoverStripe; two of those domains didn't resolve): no revenue found. They show how crowded the easy Stripe integration is.
  • Takeaway: the category supports bootstrapped companies at about $1–2M a year after many years. No solo indie dunning tool with verified revenue above a few thousand dollars a month was found.

R7. Base rate

  • No verified base rate exists for bootstrapped B2B micro-SaaS reaching a given MRR. The nearest large dataset is RevenueCat's State of Subscription Apps 2026 (17.3% of new consumer apps reach $1k a month within 2 years, 4.6% reach $10k), which covers mobile consumer apps. It's noted for reference only. Source: RevenueCat.

R8. India payment rules

  • High (Razorpay and Chargebee docs). Card e-mandates need Additional Factor of Authentication at registration and a pre-debit notification at least 24 hours before each debit. Charges above ₹15,000 need extra authentication each time. Customers can withdraw mandates at any time. Chargebee notes payment confirmation delays of up to 3 days and recommends longer grace periods. Sources: Razorpay RBI directive, Chargebee.
  • Medium (Razorpay blogs, May and June 2026). "UPI accounts for approximately 80% of retail payments in India." UPI Autopay recurring debits run without extra authentication up to ₹15,000. Razorpay blog.
  • Low. A "Digital Payments E-mandate Framework, 2026", notified 21 Apr 2026, was mentioned in a search summary. Not verified. Read the RBI source before building.

10.1 Still unverified (treat as estimates)

  1. The number of Razorpay merchants billing ₹5 lakh+ a month in subscriptions (the market-size driver).
  2. Razorpay retry count and timing, webhook names, whether a third party can trigger retries, and partner or OAuth terms.
  3. Indian involuntary churn rates, and UPI Autopay vs card mandate failure rates.
  4. Current WhatsApp Business Platform per-message rates in India, and TRAI DLT registration steps for a third-party sender.
  5. Stunning's revenue. Gravy's and FlyCode's prices.
  6. Whether Paddle lets a third party trigger retries, and Shopify's subscription-billing API rules.
  7. The Matt Goldman interview date, and whether Recurly's "annual" label is correct.

10.2 What this research changed

DocChangeWhy
01 / 02Paddle and Lemon Squeezy dropped as wedgesPaddle Retain is free on Paddle Billing, and default retries have been on since Jan 2025. Lemon Squeezy has no retry API and is moving into Stripe Managed Payments.
01 / 02Shopify subscription apps and general Stripe droppedChurn Buster and FlyCode own Shopify. Stripe bundles recovery, and 12+ tools sell on top of it.
01 / 02Razorpay and UPI Autopay picked as the wedgeNo global dunning tool lists Razorpay. Stripe doesn't retry India-issued cards. RBI rules create India-specific failures.
03"Smart retries" reclassified as table stakes / liability on RazorpayThe 24-hour pre-debit rule, and third-party retry access is unverified.
03 / 04"Pre-dunning for expiring cards" reframed as a mandate-health monitorMandate expiry and cancellation, and the ₹15,000 limit, are the Indian pre-failure signals.
03 / 06Holdout group made mandatory for the "recovered ₹X" reportEvery platform already retries, so only incremental recovery is honest.
WTDAFlat INR pricing with a guarantee, not a share of recovered revenueEstablished players (Churn Buster, Churnkey, Stunning, Baremetrics) are flat. Performance pricing invites attribution disputes.
02Target low-ticket B2C subscriptions, not enterprise SaaSInvoluntary churn is 0.18 for $250+ customers against 1.6–1.7 in education and digital media.

10.3 Open questions (next research run)

  1. Razorpay partner and app programme terms, OAuth scopes, and subscription webhook list.
  2. Any published Indian data on UPI Autopay and card-mandate success and failure rates (NPCI, Razorpay, Juspay, Cashfree reports).
  3. Cashfree and PayU subscription APIs and native dunning (the second-rail candidates).
  4. Whether Razorpay has announced WhatsApp reminders or recovery analytics for Subscriptions.
  5. The RBI e-mandate framework text (2026), if it exists.
