2. Market Reality Check
Prices and install counts were checked on 30 Sept 2026 unless marked otherwise. Confidence levels and sources are in research/10. Re-check them before using them externally.
2.1 Who exactly is the buyer?
"Notion users who need a help center or a form" isn't a buyer. Split by what each group can pay and what it already has:
| Segment | What they use today | Willingness to pay a new vendor | Pain score (1–10) | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Notion users who need a form | Notion Forms (free), Tally (free), NoteForms, Fillout, Google Forms | $0–25 a month, and only for power features | 2. The free options work. | Avoid. |
| Small startups whose docs live in Notion and need a public help center | Notion Sites (free), HelpKit, NotionDesk, Super | $15–63 a month | 4. They can publish for free today. The pain is looks, search and analytics. | Real, but served by 7+ tools. |
| Software companies (10–250 Confluence users) that write docs in Confluence and copy them into a separate help center | Zendesk Guide, Intercom articles, Help Scout Docs, Document360, plus copy-paste | $20–150 a month, if it replaces a tool costing $50–695 | 6. Double-writing, drift between internal and public docs, and a second bill. | Best available buyer. Narrow, but it pays. |
| Confluence teams already on Scroll Sites or Refined Sites | The incumbent app | They'd switch only for a clear gap | 3 | Don't target. Win them only on migration mistakes or price rises. |
| Google Docs–based small businesses | Google Sites, Kbee, Spaceli (free), HelpSite | $0–39 a month | 3 | Low price, low urgency. |
| Vertical operators (e.g. property managers, clinics, franchises) needing a customer-facing knowledge base | Generic help centers, PDFs, their vertical software | Unknown | Unknown | Untested. No named revenue evidence found in this run. |
Overall pain score for the idea as described: 3/10. A form builder on Notion is a free feature now. A Notion help center is a vitamin with a free native substitute. The Confluence double-writing segment scores 6: real and measurable in dollars, but not urgent.
2.2 Competitors and incumbents
Native platform features (free, and your biggest threat)
| Tool | What it covers | Why a customer wouldn't need you |
|---|---|---|
| Notion Forms (2024, all plans) | Forms that write to a Notion database. Conditional logic on Business and Enterprise. Branding can be switched off on paid plans. Anonymous responses. | It's free, inside the tool they already pay for. This kills the form half of the idea. |
| Notion Sites | Free publishing with search-engine indexing. Paid plans get 5 notion.site domains, homepage customisation and Google Analytics. Custom domains cost $10 a month, or $8 on annual billing. | Good enough for many small teams. HelpKit says it still lacks visitor search, password protection and help-center analytics. Those are the next obvious features for Notion to ship. |
| Notion Custom Agents (24 Feb 2026, Business and Enterprise) and Agent SDK (public beta, 15 Sept 2026) | Q&A agents over workspace knowledge. Remote replaced its internal IT help desk with one. | Internal today. A public-facing Notion agent would take the "AI answers" upsell off every Notion help-center tool. |
| Jira Service Management help center (long-standing, not re-checked in this run) | A customer portal with Confluence knowledge-base articles | Teams already on JSM get a help center with their Confluence docs. |
| Atlassian "Public Pages for Confluence" (unverified) | A search summary says Atlassian launched an app to publish chosen Confluence pages as public, SEO-friendly pages. Not confirmed whether Atlassian or a vendor built it. | If native and free, it would squeeze the low end of this wedge. Check it first. |
| Google Sites | Free sites that can embed Google Docs | Why the Google Docs version scores low. |
Notion layers (help center and site builders)
| Tool | Price | Position |
|---|---|---|
| HelpKit | Starter $15 a site a month (25 articles, 1 seat), Business $31 (100 articles, 5 seats), Professional $63 (1,000 articles, 10 seats). AI chatbot +$49 a month. 7-day trial. | The leader. Claims 1,000+ customers. Search, widget, analytics, gated access, multi-language, llms.txt, MCP server. Notion is its only content source. |
| NotionDesk | Paid (price not checked) | "Closest direct alternative to HelpKit" (per HelpKit's own comparison) |
| Notaku | Paid | Docs, blogs, changelogs, roadmaps. "Slowed development pace" (per HelpKit). |
| Super.so, Bullet.so, Potion, Feather, Simple.ink | Paid | General Notion website builders. Some do docs. |
Notion layers (forms)
| Tool | Price | Position |
|---|---|---|
| Tally | Free: unlimited forms and submissions (fair use), Notion integration included. Pro $24, Business $74. | Claims 500,000+ teams. The default "better than Notion Forms" choice. |
| NoteForms (formerly NotionForms) | Free, Pro $20, Team $49 | Claims 130,000+ users. Positions itself as "much more powerful than Notion's native forms". |
| OpnForm (same founder) | Free, Pro $25, Business $67, Enterprise $220. Open source. Self-hosted enterprise licence $1,999 a year. | Built to diversify away from Notion. |
| Fillout | Freemium | Another strong Notion-integrated builder. |
Confluence publishing apps (the wedge's real competitors)
| App | Installs | Rating | Price | Position |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Scroll Sites for Confluence (K15t, Platinum partner, Cloud Fortified) | 3,188 | 4.9 (111 reviews) | From $25 a month up to 10 users. Unlimited sites, free help-center theme, custom domain. | AI search, "LLM-ready", SSO and token access, Zendesk and JSM integrations. Replaces Scroll Viewport, which reaches end of life on 30 Sept 2026. |
| Refined Sites for Confluence (Platinum partner, Cloud Fortified) | 2,412 | 4.4 (63 reviews) | Standard (1 public site, Refined domain) and Advanced (unlimited sites, custom domains) | AI search with summaries. Intranets, knowledge bases, docs. Claims 5,000+ organisations. EU data residency. |
Install counts from a search summary (3,413 and 2,521) differ from the listing pages. The listing figures are used here.
Standalone help centers (what the target buyer pays for today)
A vendor comparison (Helpable, May 2026) priced these for a realistic team: GitBook $40, Help Scout Docs $50, Notion $50, Crisp $95, Helpjuice $120, Document360 $149, HubSpot Service Hub Pro $450, Zendesk Suite Growth + AI $695 a month. The publisher sells a competing tool, so treat this as indicative.
2.3 Vitamin or painkiller?
Mostly a vitamin.
- Forms: a free commodity. Not even a vitamin.
- Notion help center: a vitamin. The team can publish with Notion Sites for free. They pay to look professional and to get search.
- Confluence double-writing: a weak painkiller. It costs a second bill ($50–695 a month) and hours of copy-paste. Public docs drift from the internal truth, and customers get wrong answers.
- Test: if the product vanished tomorrow, what would the customer lose? A Notion help-center user goes back to Notion Sites. A Confluence wedge customer loses the public site their customers use, plus the weekly list of doc gaps. Only the second makes leaving costly.
2.4 Market size: venture-scale, lifestyle, or a feature?
Rough bottom-up (assumptions flagged):
- Confluence publishing apps have ~5,600 installs between the two leaders. Assume ~40% are public help centers and that the double-writing segment outside those apps is 2–3x that: roughly 5,000–10,000 reachable teams. (Assumption, not verified.)
- At ~$650 a year each, that's $3–6.5M a year. Taking 3–5% of it is $90–325k ARR, which is about $8–27k MRR at best.
- HelpKit shows the Notion-side pool supported at least $120k ARR for one vendor in 2025.
Answer, by version:
- Forms on Notion: a feature. Notion has built it.
- Help center on Notion: a lifestyle business for the incumbent. A feature for Notion to finish.
- Help center on Confluence: a lifestyle business, $3–10k MRR for a newcomer on the evidence found. Not venture-scale.
2.5 Geography
Marketplace apps sell worldwide in USD, so the geography choice is small. Two notes:
- EU buyers ask about data residency. Refined offers EU residency. Plan for it, or state clearly where public pages are cached.
- Help centers are public by design. Gated sections (partner or customer-only docs) bring GDPR duties for the email or SSO data you collect.
