1. Verdict
Why a ladder instead of one target
This idea is assessed at six MRR levels instead of one fixed target, the same as the rest of the portfolio. For a form backend the useful question isn't "can it hit $40k like Web3Forms?". It's how likely each level is for a new entrant in Sept 2026, and whether any version is worth the hours.
The anchor: what base rate?
There is no verified base rate for bootstrapped B2B micro-SaaS reaching MRR levels from launch.
- The catalog's own research found that every common indie-SaaS success statistic failed verification ("54% earn $0", "15% reach $1K–$10K MRR").
- MicroConf's State of Independent SaaS surveys founders who already run businesses. It measures survivors, not launches.
- RevenueCat 2026 is verified, but covers mobile subscription apps: 17.3% of new apps reach $1k a month within 2 years, and 4.6% reach $10k. Its Business category is 14.7% and 1.6%. Shown for scale only.
The odds below are judgment estimates, anchored to:
| Anchor | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Web3Forms: $40,946 MRR, 2,967 subscriptions, $302,410 all-time revenue on Paddle (verified, 30 Sept 2026). Founded Dec 2020. | The category pays, at ~$13.80 ARPU. |
| Web3Forms' earlier path: ~$1.6k MRR and 100+ payers in Nov 2024 (one secondary source, unverified) | If true, it took ~4 years to reach $1.6k, then grew ~25x in under 2 years. The surge lines up with the AI site-builder wave (inference, not verified). |
| At least 10 entrants in 2025–26 (splitforms, Forminit, NormForms, Formgrid, Static Forms, FormBackend, Formward, Formhook, Formdall, FormVault) | The wave that lifted Web3Forms is now crowded. No revenue figure was found for any of them. FormVault has already stopped taking signups. |
| ChartMogul: median monthly churn 6.1% below $25 ARPA | Low-priced form backends leak customers fast. Growth needs a steady stream of free signups. |
Step 1: is there a wedge?
| Candidate wedge | Open gap? | Evidence | Price per customer | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AI site builders (Lovable, Bolt, v0) | No | 5+ entrants publish "Lovable contact form" guides. Lovable Cloud is on by default and Lovable now sends email from the user's domain (paid plans, 50k/month included). Formspree is on the Vercel Marketplace with 1,000+ installs, and v0 uses that marketplace for providers. Native "partner" status on Vercel is by partnership. | $5–15 | Crowded, and the platforms are closing it |
| One framework or host (Astro, Hugo, Cloudflare Pages) | No | Web3Forms has guides for Astro, Hugo, Jekyll, Eleventy, Next.js, Nuxt, Gatsby, Cloudflare, Vercel, Netlify and more. Netlify Forms is free and unlimited. | $5–12 | Too small, and already covered |
| A region (India, SEA, LatAm) | No | The incumbent is Indian and already priced for it. | $3–8 | No edge, lower prices |
| EU / GDPR hosting, English | No | Formward (Sweden, €10–90), Formhook (Germany, €12.50–41), Formdall (Germany, €4.99–59.99). Web3Forms' stack already includes Hetzner and markets "GDPR compliant". | €5–30 | Taken in 2025–26 |
| DSGVO backend for DACH web agencies (German-language, AVV per client, white-label) | Narrow, and contested | Formdall targets exactly this, with an Agency plan at €59.99. FormVault (Germany) stopped taking signups. The DPF survived its first court test. WordPress sites, the DACH default, have free self-hosted forms. | €9–79 | Least-bad. Outbound selling can replace SEO. Still below the bar. |
| Buy an existing form backend | n/a | The catalog's verified median is 3.9x profit on Acquire.com. | n/a | Better than any build if you want this category |
Odds at each MRR level (reached by month 24)
| MRR at month 24 | Base rate | As described: generic form backend (full-time) | AI-builder wedge (full-time) | EU-hosted, English (full-time) | Fallback: DACH agencies, ~15 hrs/week | Fallback: DACH agencies, full-time |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| $1k | No verified base rate | 15% | 18% | 20% | 25% | 35% |
| $3k | No verified base rate | 6% | 7% | 8% | 12% | 18% |
| $5k | No verified base rate | 3% | 4% | 4% | 7% | 11% |
| $10k | No verified base rate | 1% | 1.5% | 1.5% | 3% | 5% |
| $20k | No verified base rate | <0.5% | <0.5% | <0.5% | 1% | 2% |
| $50k | No verified base rate | <0.2% | <0.2% | <0.2% | <0.5% | <0.5% |
The fallback carries 3 conditions: German fluency plus a paid data-protection review, access to 30 DACH agencies in month 1, and 5 agencies paying by day 45. If any one is missing, multiply by about 0.6.
These are judgment estimates, not computed statistics.
How to read the ladder
- Every column is low. The best one reaches $10k about one time in twenty.
- The fallback beats the others only at the bottom. Agencies pay ~2x the ARPU and churn less, and you can reach them by email instead of by search. Above ~$3k you run out of reachable DACH agencies that build non-WordPress sites (pool size unverified).
- The AI-builder wedge has the most demand and the worst position. Demand flows through search and LLM answers, where Web3Forms and Formspree are already present and five newer entrants are writing the same guides.
- Hours barely matter. The build is 3–4 weeks. The gap between 15 hours and full-time is mostly in how many agencies you can call.
Portfolio definitions (for comparison with other ideas)
| Tier | Definition | Fallback, ~15 hrs/week | Fallback, full-time | As described |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tier A (venture) | $1M ARR within 36 months, ≥70% margin, ≥50% month-12 logo retention | <0.5% | <0.5% | <0.2% |
| Tier B (profitable business) | $20k+ MRR within 24 months, profitable, ≥80% gross margin, ≥70% month-3 retention | ~1% | ~2% | <0.5% |
Compared with the other ideas in this portfolio: FormDrop has the lowest odds at every rung. At $10k, DocPress is 12% / 22%, StatusLens 15% / 26%, and BhashaCity, the lowest until now, 7% / 13%.
Fundable in current form?
No. It's a proven, crowded, low-price category with a dominant solo incumbent and more than ten new clones. No investor funds entrant number fifteen. It also doesn't need funding: it's cheap to build, which is exactly the problem. See 06-fundability.md.
One-paragraph verdict
Web3Forms is a real, verified, $41k-MRR business, and that's the trap. It looks like proof that the idea works, but what it proves is that six years of backlinks and a place in AI-generated code work. The endpoint itself is a weekend of code, and in 2025–26 at least ten people wrote that weekend of code, several aimed at exactly the wedges a new entrant would pick: Lovable and v0 users, EU hosting, German agencies, even an MCP server for AI agents. Meanwhile Netlify made its forms free and unlimited, and Lovable started sending email natively. The least-bad build is a DSGVO form backend sold to DACH agencies by outbound selling, because it swaps SEO you don't have for sales you can do. Even that reaches $10k about 3–5% of the time, and Formdall already sells it. Don't start it. If you want this category, buy an existing form backend. If you want to build, pick an idea in this portfolio with an open gap.
